I have to admit, that after the heat storm here in California a few years back, I finally purchased a window A/C. Not for my benefit, but for my CA born Children. Go figure. I only allow it to run if the inside temps are 90+.

There is no reason to own a dryer in CA or most places in the world. Just saying, if you run Seti on a GPU..............

I guess I should add that I have continued my green educations. I am a member of the US Green Building Council and LEED 4 associate. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. I am also Title 24, California's mandatory energy conservation laws, certified.
As I said before I could fill several books on energy, lighting, heating, etc. If you want to get some ideals look review the version 3 manual. It can be downloaded here: LEED v3 for new Construction.

IF you all want to get self righteous and trite here, none of us is being totally green because we burn excess carbon cycles searching for ET.

No vehicle; moved to an optimally public-transit-accessible locale to allow this.
No children of my own; raised two though.
Live in an apartment instead of a house.
Recycle whatever I can; this includes diverting any recyclables I find in our building in the trash to the right place.
Eat little meat, and no mammals (exception occasionally only at restaurants.)
Try to save energy by minimizing use of AC/heat, shorter showers with a low-flow showerhead, non-incandescent lighting, etc. Major exception: SETI@Home obviously. :^)

Surely that wouldn't include Hornets, Yellow Jackets, Termites, Carpenter Ants, Cockroaches and Clothes/Pantry Moths? I put the moths last, since I kill them all the time, so that they don't lay eggs that can produce destructive young that eat clothes... All these bugs are either destructive or dangerous and I don't go and seek them out. Grace doesn't really like them either and She's an expert bug hunter.

Personally yes, I would try my hardest not to kill any of the above, I do not knowingly kill any animal or insect that I come across.

Anything that gets into my flat, I try my best to help leave and would not kill.

On my daily walks I keep a sharp eye out so I do not step on anything that crosses my path.

I only eat meat because I believe my body needs the proteins. We evolved from hunters and still need the protein. I am not 100% happy but the alternatives are not easy or cheap.

I also recycle all I can, and now drive a car of the lowest polluting category other than electric or hybrids.

There seems to be an awful lot of ignorance about where your food comes from and how it is made and the impact that this has on the environment.

I only eat meat because I believe my body needs the proteins. We evolved from hunters and still need the protein.

Some complete protein sources from plants:

Soy ferments (miso, tofu, etc.)
Quinoa (is pricey though but needs to be eaten only occasionally to get anything missing.)
Mixed beans and rice (yes, that is enough. Rice should be brown of course!)
GABA/GBR (germinated brown rice): Simply soak brown rice for 1-2 days in near-body-temperature water and then cook normally.

You only need these if your diet is otherwise monotonic. If you're eating a variety of vegetables, grains, legumes and fruits you don't have to worry about protein.

The bigger concern is lack of vitamins D and B12. You can get D from shiitake mushrooms but B12 is only from animal sources (milk and eggs are good non-meat sources) or chemically synthesized supplements.

I think if I had grown up in the UK and not in Africa I might be less concerned about water. So many people I know here just aren't. As a precious resource, seeing a tap left running really upsets me... and my other half does it THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE TIME he brushes his teeth. I mean WHY?! It drives me nuts! He says it's not "wasted" because it is still water *brief pause to indulge in borderline apoplectic fit* I say it IS because of the environmental cost of treating it and transporting it just for him to let it pour straight out the tap and drain into a sewer.

As to being green: because I live in inner London I am fortunate in that I can pat myself on the back for not running a car. It would be much more of a challenge to be green in that area, if I did not. I also have not travelled by plane for two decades - but I probably undid any good in that area by the amount of travelling I did that way as a child :/

I do not buy flowers and discourage people from buying them for me. So much land and water is used for the western flower market in places like Kenya. I understand it's a much relied on source of income, but I think the resources could be put to much better use. Then there's the environmental cost of transporting them too, even those that are grown much closer to home. If someone REALLY wants to give me flowers... then a dandelion will delight me no end :) as long as I can then give it to a guinea pig or rabbit to munch on afterwards. But I am a great believer in flowers... for bees and butterflies especially... I just prefer to see them growing I think.

I recycle everything I can. What I can re-use rather than simply recycle I do. And yes... I do have a compost bin! And I don't leave lights or electrical appliances on when they're not in use... apart from crunching for seti of course... and I use energy saving bulbs everywhere. And I've made a stand against polystyrene packaging and other environmental nasties too... and I don't eat meat anymore... although I still cook it for the rest of the family.

Giving up milk is my next goal... but that's an animal welfare thing not a green aim... So! I would say limiting my impact on the planet (other than when I inadvertently take a nose-dive into it of course :)) is something I will always try very hard to do... if not for us lot... for all it's other creatures :)

I have a compost bin... in a way. I was given a green one by the city, which was too small, stunk, was a pain to empty (and was probably being landfilled by our building anways) and required a big diesel-burning truck to move the collected organic waste around.

Then I realized I had a much better one already: It's powered by gravity, it's great at hiding the smells, and everything that goes into it gets returned to the earth or turned into mulch. Just about everyone else has one too.

It's called a "toilet" in case you were still wondering. :^) So I chop up the waste until it's small enough and down it goes. And I don't do a special flush for it either.

Giving up milk, I had a brief try at that, though it was only for medical reasons, I tried lite soy milk, while the taste is ok and the color on the brownish side, I'll not ever make pancakes with that again, I made 3 pancakes with that, I got about halfway thru the pancakes before I could eat no more, as the taste was just this side of awful, so down the drain the uneaten parts went, right into the disposal.
