It could be smaller than it looks and be .45 pistol or 45-70 rifle.

Yes but a lot of obsolete rifle cartriges were rimmed nerly all revolver cartridges are. So my best guess now is a .45 or .44 revolver, it would be impossible to deduce any more than thatwithout actually seeing it,

What kind of cartridge?

I just new you were going to ask that.
12 or 20 guage shotgun cartriges, its a bit hard to juge the size accurately.

OK you were first. The place I found specifies 12 gauge.
