A heck of a lot better than poking a mobile keypad. Now you can send texts from your computer keyboard!

http://www.afreesms.com/intl/

You can also send an email that turns into an SMS -- if you know the correct incantation to turn the phone number into an email address. The correct incantation depends on the carrier. If I recall correctly AT&T is #.txt@att.net. Verizon is #@vtext.com. Keep the email short.

PS. The link given did not work. I could not type in any of the fields.

I knew how to send email to a Sprint phone when I had Sprint. Don't remember now.

Keep in mind that if the message recipient is charged for receiving messages, they will be charged for those sent this way as well.

If the recipient replies to the text message, it gets sent to the email address that was used to send the original text.

[Edit] There is a caveat to most carriers though. The text message you send cannot be more than 160 characters, including subject and body. Anything more than 160 characters is truncated.

Since Google has upgraded, I get text messages from Amazon (on my packages) and Facebook notifications.

I have an AT&T plan that charges you by the text message $.20 or requires you to purchase a text plan. As I don't have anybody to text, I just do without. I do have a data plan so I configured an email address just for the phone and if I need to move text or pictures, I can do it through the email address with only the email size restrictions instead of the 160 character limit.

I had a similar plan. Pick one of $0 for no text messages, $5 for 200, or $20 for unlimited with an additional charge of $0.20 per text message for going over. I was always over 200, but not enough to ever reach $20.

My current plan has unlimited text messages.
