Can I combine a 4650 and a 6570 in the same machine and expect it to work with lunatics? |

So long as the Catalyst version you are using still has OpenCL support for HD4000 cards. Then they can probably both be made to work. I think Cat 12.4 or 12.6 was as high as I could go with my HD4870. I will have to double check to be sure. It looks like since change from r1832 to r2399 your 4650 is generating only errors. If you could try the card over on Beta with the v7.03 AP app I am sure the devs would appreciate it. http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/beta/ Using just the 6570 in the system might be the easiest route to go. Thanks Hal, I'll see if I can't just fit in the 6570 alone in the machine. The rest of what you said is too confusing for me without asking a bunch of questions. Trying to salvage the 4650 is probably not worth the effort in any event. |

So long as the Catalyst version you are using still has OpenCL support for HD4000 cards... That gave me an idea. So I checked. I'm use to XP where the last OpenCL driver is 12.1. I haven't had Vista very long, but, according to the Details Catalyst 12.4 supports both my 7700s and the 4670. So, I'm assuming I can run my two 7750s and the 4670 at the same time? I might have to try that. As you can see, I didn't have any trouble running my HD 4670 and 6770 at the same time in XP, http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/beta/result.php?resultid=17410640 |

Can I combine a 4650 and a 6570 in the same machine with these conditions: The 4650 will be the only one plugged into the monitor. It will be on a riser. The 6570 will be used only for lunatics. I imagine I may be asking a lot with this question and if I don't get an answer, it's fine. The reason I would be doing this is so that I don't interrupt the lunatics work if I am doing other work on the machine. Now, I only have the 6570 on the machine. As it works now, other work is degraded dramatically by lunatics. |

Can I combine a 4650 and a 6570 in the same machine with these conditions: If you want to use the 4650 for the display and the 6570 to crunch with. Then that can be done easily. You would just to add one line to your cc_config.xml in fact. <ignore_ati_dev>N</ignore_ati_dev> With the ID # of the 4650. Then BOINC will only use the 6570. Great! Thanks Hal. One last question. Where/What is the ID#. The same 0 or 1 listed in the event log? I thought that perhaps these were dynamically supplied numbers. |

Great! Thanks Hal. One last question. Where/What is the ID#. The same 0 or 1 listed in the event log? I thought that perhaps these were dynamically supplied numbers. Something like this OpenCL: AMD/ATI GPU 0: ATI Radeon HD 5750 (Juniper Pro) OpenCL: Intel GPU 0: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 That would be it. The numbers are more or less static. Unless you were to swap the cards around. The ID generally follows the order of the PCIe slots. Hal, I've tried different ways of writing the cc_config code but none of the combinations work. Every time at the Event Log I get: found Anonymous ... App Version needs OpenCL but GPU doesn't support it ???? It doesn't sound like it will work. --edit-- It feels like it's nearly nap time for me. |

Hal, You appear to have the Legacy Driver Installed. The Legacy Driver is not meant for any card over HD4. You need to use the Display Driver Uninstaller to remove the Legacy driver and then install Catalyst 12.4 which is the last driver that will work with the 4650 and the 6570 card in Windows Vista/7. |

I think Catalyst 12.1 will be even better (if exists for the OS used) It (maybe) will give less CPU load? (as I'm on XP I'm not sure of the above) Â - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :) Â |

I reverted to using just the 6570. I was having too many problems trying to get it to work. Did you ever find it impossible to get into safe mode? And then in safe mode, which I have never worked with, although I can do command line OK, I really don't know how to proceed from there. Too many problems for me. I need to drop it. Thanks anyway for the help. |

... and then install Catalyst 12.4 which is the last driver that will work with the 4650 and the 6570 card in Windows Vista/7. Yes, 12.1 would work with Win 7, but, 12.1 has a nasty Sleep bug in XP. I don't know if if exists in Win 7, but a few people have complained about ATI task taking too long in Win 7. I know it exists in XP, been there done that. I don't know if 12.4 has the Sleep bug or not as I just started using it. Display Driver Uninstaller recommends Safe Mode but it will work without being in Safe Mode. Most of the time I don't bother booting into Safe Mode even though I've never had any trouble with it. I used DDU to remove 13.12 and installed 12.4 in Vista the other day. Seems to work fine with my 4670 and two 7750s. Unfortunately, the latest Beta build of AstroPulse Version 7 breaks the 4670. I'm waiting for a Bug Fix version, http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/beta/results.php?hostid=72451 BTW, the HD 4600s will only work with AstroPulse tasks, NO Multibeam will work. So, if you have a 4600 installed you will have to exclude it from Multibeam tasks...if you download MB tasks. |

We have an unfortunate name clash between vendors here. Your remark sent me off in a panic to check host 7118033, which is running Multibeam perfectly happily on an HD 4600 - but in my case, it's the Haswell Intel iGPU..... So, I take it your remarks only apply to the ATI/AMD HD 4600? Just for clarification ;) |

Yes Richard. If you would have read the thread you would know the OP is talking about his ATI HD4650, which he has currently removed from his machine. I am talking about my ATI HD4670 which is currently waiting to test a new Beta build of AP_v7. They are known as the ATI HD4600 series. |

Yes, I've been following the thread, because I'm the one who has to re-phrase the wording on the installer application selection pages if there are incompatibilities. As we all know, there are tendencies for threads on this message board to wander away from the original intention of the opening post - and in this case, neither the opening post nor the current thread title mentions ATI. I just thought I'd pre-empt a potential thread wander before it happened. |

Thanks TBar, I think when I want to do any graphic work I'll just pause out my gpu load. |

And then in safe mode, which I have never worked with, although I can do command line OK, I really don't know how to proceed from there. Too many problems for me. I need to drop it. Thanks anyway for the help. Safe mode is just windows with a bare set of drivers loaded. For Windows 7 just pressing F8 and then choosing "Safe mode" or "Safe Mode with networking" is all that is needed for the driver uninstaller. Some machine boot very fast. In that case you may have to keep pressing F8 repeatedly until you get the selection screen is displayed. If you see the Windows 7 loading graphic you missed it. As my notebook has a rather low powered GPU I have to suspend GPU processing while watching a movie. The BOINC option for "snooze GPU" only suspending processing for 1 hour. Using boinccmd from a command line lets you specify any amount of time you wish to suspend processing. So for that system I made a .bat file to suspend processing for 2.5 hours & then have a shortcut to it on the taskbar. Using "boinccmd --set_gpu_mode never 9000" causes the GPU processing to spend for the given number of seconds & then resume its previous state. Also if there is a specific application you run that you would need to suspend GPU processing you can tell BOINC, via <exclusive_gpu_app>important.exe</exclusive_gpu_app> in the cc_config.xml, the exe name. Then while the exe is running BOINC will suspend GPU processing. BOINC will resume GPU processing once the application has been closed. There is a slight delay for BOINC to do this. As it only checks every few seconds, instead of milliseconds, for the running apps.
