Maybe something like NSA vacuum cleaner style snooping. Or 1984.

How nice of you. Expected better, especially from an ex-Londoner. You stated it yourself, the warnings were ignored. That fact alone shows just how difficult it is for those who have "To defend the country".

As you fail to see that after that good post of yours...

The only one's that can say it wasn't there problem is the armed forces as they take action when give orders to do so , however the intelligence services is a different thing along with our leaders

This conflict has been going on for as long as I can remember, possibly since Spain owned them.

I said it before and I'll say it again, but British terror threat levels are idiotic. Substantial, severe, those words are meaningless.

What would you have instead?

How about:

  • Nothing to fear,
  • Be slightly jumpy,
  • Run if you hear a loud noise,
  • Begin stockpiling tinned food,
  • DON'T GO OUTSIDE!

Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge.

Sounds like the 50s and the 60s when we all prepared for nuclear war.

That was also a possibility.
Unless we can 'Un-Invent' Nuclear Weapons (impossible): There will be future use of these weapon's, by someone.

It 69 years since last time. Quite impressive.

69 Years is Not Historically Impressive.
Let's see: No war, someplace, between 100 A.D. and 169 A.D. Impressive? What happened next?
One must think in Historical timeframes. 69 years is meaningless.

I have to disgree. In Europe starts a war every 25 year approx.
Every war has newer and better weapons and using them.
However nukes has still not been used as a tactical weapon.
Japan was a strategic descision.

Agree to disagree.
They will be used sometime in the future. Leader's, including all Human's, for good or evil, have not changed. Bad, and evil Human's, possibly unknowingly suicidal, will have possession of WMD's. When, not if, will they use them?
Maybe 5, 10, 20, 100 years (more?), from now. Who knows? Neither you, nor I, knows when, and by who.

I have heard Oppenheimers reaction when they have done the Trinity test and he was reciting some sanscript text.
Here we go again...

And for that matter.
What terror weapon could be better than nuculear weapons?
Virus of course but that is very difficult to handle.

So was developing a nuclear weapon. But It got done. I see no obstacles in developing a virus and or bacteria to be used as a weapon. Take small pox or anthrax just for an example. And whosto say the common flu isnt being weaponized.

Ebola Now that scares the crap out of me. There is a weapon of mass destruction.

Really? You forgot that the nuclear bomb was developed by putting some of the best physicists in the world together in the same project. Even then it cost them years and tons of cash to actually do it. And thats building a nuclear bomb which is a relatively easy weapon to make.

Now viruses. You have to realize that there is no perfect weapons grade virus in nature. We know this because we still exist. Ebola scares you? Ebola would also make a pretty useless weapon. It kills to quickly and its to difficult to spread. We are currently seeing the largest outbreak in history and it has killed what? 1500 people? Honestly, regular bombs and machine guns kill 1500 people quicker and more effectively than Ebola. And compared to the Spanish flu or the plague 1500 dead people is nothing.

But okay, say you are stupid enough to try and build a biological bomb using some virus you found. Its not a matter of swapping that virus over a grenade and throwing it in a crowded building. No, you need a way of delivering the virus. The easiest way would be through gas. But then you immediately run into a problem because most viruses can't stay airborne for long. So that limits the amount of viruses you can use or you need to manipulate a different virus and make it possible to go airborne. Which requires a specialized lab set up and some of the best and brightest in the field of viruses. And I have the feeling its pretty difficult to get the best and brightest in the field to make you a weaponized virus. But okay, say they do, then you need to bring said virus in said dispersal container to a place where you want to infect people. Probably something like a subway or large hall. You set the thing to disperse and walk away. Mission successful? No, because even with a weaponized virus there are a lot of other variables during the dispersal stage. Airflows, etc. Essentially you are using a sort of toxic gas and that is a notoriously difficult thing to get right. Take the attacks on the Tokyo subway with Sarin gas. It only killed a few people because a number of the containers didnt work and the gas was for the most part to diluted to actually kill people. The same risks exist for using a virus. Its not just a matter of getting it in the air, its also a matter of making sure people get a high enough dose of it to actually become sick.

So, do you think thats within the range of a terrorist organization? I hardly think so.
