..big no no here you can not call the Kori's "Aboriginals" they are either Kori or First peoples ...

Not in Alice Springs. First they identify by their clan or talk group ("tribe" is out) but collectively they are Aborigines. As the Jenny Macklin, the former Labor Minister for Aboriginal Affairs was told at public meeting here in no uncertain terms.

BTW, To be accurate, Koori only applies if you are referring to people from Southern NSW. Further North they are Kamileroi and then Murri.

Edit: Since the original post, I've discovered that although the people from Southern NSW and Northern Vic have adopted the name Koori, it is originally from the NSW North coast.

"Aboriginals" - I take it that you mean the native North Americans, Indians, if so why didn't you just go ahead and say so.

big no no here you can not call the Kori's "Aboriginals" they are either Kori or First peoples and Canada is not the only country that treated the First peoples badly we here did too .

And i'll say it till the cows come home

It's them Bloody Liberals that did it and are doing it again even down here

So Cliff it's first peoples not aborigianal or native north Americans

It's First Peoples

First Peoples and Aboriginal are interchangeable terms.

A Note on Terminology: Inuit, Metis, First Nations, and Aboriginal

I am happy to see a frank discussion of race on the boards. As a citizen of the USA, I think most of my fellow citizens would agree that our country has come a long way in this area, but that we still have a very long way to go.

I do not think it is possible to discuss race until we all agree that we are, to some degree, all racists. We do not live in a race-free climate. It matters not what your skin color is - we have, each one of us, absorbed racism to some degree, whether we know it or not.

My father, good man though he was, certainly had his "Archie Bunker" moments. My mother, good woman though she is, does not have "Edith Bunker's" compelling kindness and gift of consistently being able to see things from another's vantage point. I grew up in a mostly white neighborhood full of families who tended to be comfortably resourced. The television shows I watched in the 60's and 70's were certainly not race-blind. We are all influenced by the environments of our formative years. I would be lying if I said that a racist thought never ever ever ever popped into my head. When such offensive thoughts occur, I try to recognize them as such. When I examine one of these thoughts I invariably discover the following:

1. The thought was untrue
2. The thought was unfair
3. The thought was a consequence of my living, for 51 years, in a society that is not yet free of racism
4. The thought must NOT be allowed to influence my behavior

And while we are on the subject, I will also admit that I did not grow up in a society free of class-ism, homophobia, sexism and a host of other nasty things. I genuinely believe that the first and most important step to eliminating unfairness in our society is to first recognize and examine unfairness in ourselves.

Whiteness???
OMFG...
And I get castigated at times for referring to little furry things as 'coons'.
WTF change of epochs did I miss??????

Some little furry things may well be known as raccoons. but you must also be aware that "coons" is also a derogative name for African-Americans. If you weren't aware of it before, I just pulled your coattail, here endith todays lesson.

I am relatively well versed in most of the words of the king's english, and most of the meanings attached to them, including some of the unkind ones.
I also know that I can refer to coons or coonhounds without intentionally denigrating anybody of other heritage, unless THEY wish to draw that upon themselves.

Watched Forrest Gump yesterday evening, BF never saw it before. So funny how Forrest understands the word raccoons when someone mentions coons to him and how he is completely incognizent of the word coon...

The "I" word is nearly as big a slur as the "N" word.

I know they operate a TV channel called "FNX" for First Nations Experience. I think First Peoples is what they prefer, at least in the USA.

Angela....
May I thank you for your frankness on the subject?
My own dear father was partially the root of some past beliefs that I held.
And I hope you know you can trust me when I say that although I have gotten beyond them and in real life, and no longer allow them to influence my actions, those deeply embedded perceptions still exist from my youth.

I work with people from all walks of life, and I don't treat any one of them differently than another based on their origin. I simply won't allow myself to go there anymore, because I HAVE learned that it is simply not right.

When I was very young, there were a few instances where such prejudices were directed towards myself. When a few schoolmates learned of my German heritage, I got called 'Nazi', 'Jew Killer', 'Hitler Lover'....etc. I never made an issue of it, and it slowly went away later on in school.

So, yes. I do understand the impact of words.

Every seti@home cruncher is a citizen scientist. When a good scientist has an idea, he or she does not go around trying to prove that the idea is right. The good scientist makes a career of trying to prove that the idea is wrong. It is only after standing up to test after test after test of validity that a scientist can say that an idea has merit.

Fortunately for humanity, intolerant thoughts are not difficult to prove wrong!!! Also, as citizen scientists we are nicely equipped with the tools we need to poke holes in any unjust ideas that may suddenly pop into our brains.

Mark I cannot judge your heart, but I can read your posts. Several of your posts over the years have appeared to me to be intolerant in the areas of race, religion, political affiliation, gender or sexual orientation. When I say that I try to keep untrue and unfair thoughts from influencing my behavior, I include written and spoken words in the category of actions that I call "my behavior".

I wish us all strength and skill as we struggle with intolerance in ourselves and in our society. It has been my personal experience that this struggle is not something one "gets beyond". Personally, I am better at it than I used to be, but I am not "beyond" it. If I deemed myself to be "beyond" untrue, unjust, unfair and unkind beliefs, I think I would be at risk for not recognizing intolerance in myself.

Angela, I believe I have moved on regarding the subject of race.

I don't recall ever bashing anybody else over their religion, except to vouch for the faith in my own, and not agreeing with agnostics. I have more than once posted that all others are entitled to their own beliefs.

I do have very strong opinions about politics and have expressed my dismay over our current administration and many of it's policies.

I have in the past held a dim view of anything that does not conform to 'the norm' regarding gender or sexual orientation. And that one has been very hard to beat out of myself. But over the years I have had to sort that one as well.
I work with a couple of folks that are not perhaps conforming to my past beliefs, shall we say. But I have to set anything along those lines aside and deal with it personally, not outwardly. In particular, there are also more than a few musical talents that I enjoy very much who are not 'straight'. One of whom I knew on a very personal level.

So, Angela.
Please try to understand that I am not perfect. But I am also not the same man that I was 14 years ago when I first joined this fine project.
And I am not done getting better.
Every time somebody like yourself points out to me where I have gone wrong, it helps to point me in a better direction.

And, dear Angela. It gets easier to accept criticism when one is better able to accept when it is correct.
And I do thank you for helping this old curmudgeon see the error of his ways at times.

Meow.

Glenn, I don't think it matters if we try and vote the current government out because this is what happens. This was last year's Federal Court ruling in Canada. They're still there...

Elections usually go the way the masses see things happening. And the way the masses see things happening is heavily influenced by what they see and hear in the media. I vote and I try to vote intelligently but the majority rules come election time.

Hev it is not funny at all that we also have a royal commission into crime in the N.S.W parliment and it looks like it will backfire on the Dumb Dumb that got it started as it now looks like the Liberals are guilty of not only election fraud but accepting donations from ban'd organisations on the federal level

Some how the election fraud has been keep'd off the news at the moment .

And people knock me for critising Liberals ( Republicains ) when you only have to look at the selfish greedy things they want to do , there all freaking evil , corrupt , lie'ing bastas

And there all reading from the same manual called the Tea Party

I'm going to ask the tea party stuff move to a different thread. I'd like to keep this one a bit more "pure" on race and immigration.

And if it takes an example in Canada to get American's talking about their policies and prejudices, then that is a good thing. I know, sometimes things are to close to home otherwise.
