Just announced, "Due to rising costs of processing chicken in America by American workers; processed chicken in America will now be sent to China for processing, and then sent back to the US to be sold." China's food handling methods are poor at best; with things like lead showing up in food. Also, locally in China, rat meat has been sold as lamb. Do we really want China processing our chicken and then have increased salmonella outbreaks??? I think NOT!!! Further, chicken processed in China and sold here in the US will NOT be identified as being processed in China. Therefore, I believe a boycott of processed, frozen chicken is in order. I for one do NOT want my chicken processed in China! TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Join Calm Chaos |

Even with cheaper labor, I can't see this happening to any great extent. Seems like the shipping costs back and forth would offset any savings. The mind is a weird and mysterious place |

Fresh chicken is NOT at issue. It's only the stuff being sent to China for processing and freezing, then being shipped back here to the US. ...and, apparently, canned soups. :-( TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Join Calm Chaos |

Thanks for the alert, but I think we may want to move discussion to Politics. David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

Thanks for the alert, but I think we may want to move discussion to Politics. I don't consider this a political thing, David. This is a food safety alert. No one is being political here. TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Join Calm Chaos |

Thanks for the alert, but I think we may want to move discussion to Politics. Well, things like this get heated(pardon the pun). It might be best to discuss over in politics. The mind is a weird and mysterious place |

I am with TL, this is a Cafe Topic. Reminds me of Langostino being shipped to Algeria to be hulled from the North Sea Fisheries. Didn't make the Global News, just Uniteds Sky Mag. Thanks Zappy. Still waiting on the link from TL for his scream across the world. Knock on wood. I have never been ill from food poisoning, just over indulgenge. I think I was about eleven when that happened. The culprit was Cake. Pluto will always be a planet to me. Seti Ambassador Not to late to order an Anni Shirt |

I am with TL, this is a Cafe Topic. Unfortunately, Uli, I don't have a link. I got the news off the TV. I thought that ZS's link to that article was sufficient. I repeat my thoughts. This is NOT a political topic, this is a Cafe topic. If it gets moved, I will request the Thread be hidden and locked. TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Join Calm Chaos |

Let's not all be so rash. Disatance is a factor too. My HOA doesn't allow me to have chickens. I would keep them for eggs, not soups. Sorry a bit of topic. Pluto will always be a planet to me. Seti Ambassador Not to late to order an Anni Shirt |

Im guessing they wont be shipping dead chickens to be processed in China. IM thinking that it will be Chinese poultry being proscessed and shipped over here. I cant see the logic of shipping twice across the Pacific to sell once and still make a profit. And if that is true. Then the CEO and major stockholders just want to make maximum profit. I cant see the logic of shipping twice across the Pacific to sell once and still make a profit. If you read the article from ZS's link, you will see that this is already done with US seafood. They ship frozen US seafood to China, China then processes it and then ships it back to the US. They are proposing the same treatment for US chicken. ...and, yes it is for maximum profit. Buy local! I buy my fish from the fisherman selling what they caught that day. My chicken from the farmer's market or I drive out to a local farm. My vegi's are also from the local farms. Buy locally supports small farms and fishermen. It reduces carbon emmissions from shipping and refergiration. You get better healthier food. if more people did it then there would be more local farms. We need to realized that paying a little more sometimes is really worth it. |

Thanks for the alert, but I think we may want to move discussion to Politics. Really??? Really??? Well let me start!!! How is the topic of "food" not ultimately a political topic? If there are any "Ayn Rand reading - Invisible Hand of the Market worshiping - Laissez Faire Libertarians" out there, you folks have absolutely NO grounds for being outraged about this issue. Food safety is the lesser problem here. I have no doubt that chicken and fish processed in China is processed in a largely food-safe manner. The bigger picture is that we don't have any manufacturing jobs left in the USA. Is anyone here REALLY surprised that now we don't even process our own food? Come on people! When was the last time you purchased a consumer good that was not made elsewhere? Do me a favor. Walk around your home and look at labels. Look at the labels on your clothes. Look at the labels on your kid's stuffed animals. Look at your electronics. Look at the bottom of your cookie jar. Look at the box surrounding whatever you just bought at Target or Wallmart or Amazon.com. What do all of these things have in common? They were all made elsewhere. In this glorious "global economy", food processing just happens to be the latest in a long line of manufacturing jobs to go overseas. Instead of collective outrage and ridiculous fear-mongering regarding rat meat and lead, how about instead we have a quiet moment of collective reflection and ask "why". Why are corporations not taxed up to their corporate eyeballs for exporting jobs? Why don't we have a living minimum wage in the USA? Why is the "American Dream" no longer achievable for so many of us? Why does it take two incomes for so many families to "make it" these days? Why are we so bad at sharing corporate profits? Why are we so challenged to open our own wallets? Why are so many of our citizens paid so poorly that they have no choice but to buy cheap, expendable consumer goods and low quality food? If you are reading this and you are a US citizen, you have the power to change things. You have an almighty "vote". The next time you are in a polling booth, please tap into your Chinese chicken outrage and vote accordingly. But do be mindful that your vote will come at a cost. Do not for a moment think that social justice comes without a cost!!! Food will cost more if it is processed by fairly paid US workers. Your underwear will double... maybe even triple in cost if it is made by fairly paid US workers. You might, as a consumer, have to think twice about filling your home with "stuff", because "stuff" will cost more if it is made by fairly paid US workers. Of course, as a fairly paid worker you might just have a little more money to spend... There will also be significant political costs to our country if, by some miracle, we all suddenly stop madly consuming goods made elsewhere. China holds a great deal of US debt. As the saying goes, "It's complicated"... |

If it were that eeasy Ang. I agree in principle since its very similar in europe. Some companies take more money for their products and still produce in China/ India or elsewhere. Just one example. Mercedes produces some cars in the USA for 2 third less costs but sell it for the same price like when it were made in germany. Its just an illusion products would become cheaper if made elsewhere. Companies just increase their profit. With food you are correct there. With each crime and every kindness we birth our future. |

If it were that eeasy Ang. A good example of that is Nike and the other sneaker makers. How much do They pay those poor kids vs. What they charge for them. Thats total freaking greed. For a stinking sneaker? No pun intended. [/quote] Old James |
