The reason Ebola isn't being stopped

CNN) -- When she was an undergraduate at Princeton University, books like "The Hot Zone" and "Virus Hunters" captivated Rebecca Levine, inspiring her to become a disease detective.

Fifteen years later, Lt. Rebecca Levine, a newly minted officer with the U.S. Public Health Service, stepped off a plane in West Africa to fight Ebola, ready to implement the key strategy she'd been taught: contact tracing.

The process that's helped stop diseases like SARS and smallpox seems simple: Find everyone who had close contact with infected individuals and track them for 21 days. If any of these contacts comes down with the disease, isolate them from the community and repeat the process by tracking the contacts' contacts.

Ebola virus: 'Biological war' in Liberia

With warnings from officials that the Ebola virus is "spreading like wildfire" in Liberia, Sarah Crowe, who works for the UN children's agency (Unicef), describes her week on the Ebola front line:

Flights into disaster zones are usually full of aid workers and journalists. Not this time.

The plane was one of the first in after some 10 airlines stopped flying to Liberia because of Ebola, and still it was empty.

Ebola is ‘devouring everything in its path.’ Could it lead to Liberia’s collapse?

With Ebola's death toll surging and a top United Nations official declaring that "the rate of acceleration is now picking up dramatically," Liberian officials have been making dire pronouncements about the deepening crisis in their country.

At a news conference Thursday, finance minister Amara Konneh said Liberia is at "war with an enemy we don't see." Two days earlier, the Ebola-ravaged country's defense minister, Brownie Samukai, delivered a harrowing warning of his own.

Gates Foundation gives $50 million to fight Ebola outbreak

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is giving $50 million to help fight the Ebola outbreak in Western Africa.

It is the giant philanthropy’s biggest donation ever for a health emergency, said Chris Elias, president of global development for the Seattle-based foundation.

The money will be released immediately to United Nations agencies and international aid groups to help scale up emergency operations and buy medical and quarantine supplies.

http://blogs.seattletimes.com/today/2014/09/gates-foundation-gives-50-million-to-fight-ebola-outbreak/

Even though that's good news, it's scary! This disease has the potential to become the pandemic of all pandemics which could decimate the planet. It should not be down to WHO or philanthropists.

Sod borders & diplomacy, all countries should unite on this until it can be isolated & cured.

Unfortunately, we'll see pigs flying before that happens!

Ok, here is an article from yesterday's New York Times.

Yes, it is an op-ed piece, but from someone knowledgeable on the subject:

Michael T. Osterholm is the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota.
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/12/opinion/what-were-afraid-to-say-about-ebola.html?emc=edit_tnt_20140911&nlid=745484&tntemail0=y&_r=2

A snip from the article.

The second possibility is one that virologists are loath to discuss openly but are definitely considering in private: that an Ebola virus could mutate to become transmissible through the air. You can now get Ebola only through direct contact with bodily fluids. But viruses like Ebola are notoriously sloppy in replicating, meaning the virus entering one person may be genetically different from the virus entering the next. The current Ebola virus’s hyper-evolution is unprecedented; there has been more human-to-human transmission in the past four months than most likely occurred in the last 500 to 1,000 years. Each new infection represents trillions of throws of the genetic dice.

If certain mutations occurred, it would mean that just breathing would put one at risk of contracting Ebola. Infections could spread quickly to every part of the globe, as the H1N1 influenza virus did in 2009, after its birth in Mexico.

Why are public officials afraid to discuss this? They don’t want to be accused of screaming “Fire!” in a crowded theater — as I’m sure some will accuse me of doing. But the risk is real, and until we consider it, the world will not be prepared to do what is necessary to end the epidemic.

In 2012, a team of Canadian researchers proved that Ebola Zaire, the same virus that is causing the West Africa outbreak, could be transmitted by the respiratory route from pigs to monkeys, both of whose lungs are very similar to those of humans. Richard Preston’s 1994 best seller “The Hot Zone” chronicled a 1989 outbreak of a different strain, Ebola Reston virus, among monkeys at a quarantine station near Washington. The virus was transmitted through breathing, and the outbreak ended only when all the monkeys were euthanized. We must consider that such transmissions could happen between humans, if the virus mutates.

Ebola Zaire is mutating fast and furiously in West Africa.

Ebola Zaire has been proven to be capable of airborne transmission from pigs to monkeys.

Ebola Reston was airborne transmitted between monkeys in all 4 outbreaks I am aware of (the twin outbreaks in late Dec. 1989 & early Jan. 1990 in Reston, VA and Alice TX, the 1992 outbreak in Italy, and the 1996 repeat outbreak in Alice TX). Ebola Reston also was airborne transmitted between monkeys and humans in the 1989/1990 Reston VA outbreak. 6 Humans got it, but thankfully did not become ill or transmit it to other humans.

Yes, Ebolavirus is a lit powderkeg just waiting to explode and take 50% to 90% of humanity with it.

thanks for the info . I have now got my respirator mask with the write filters so if it does go airborne i'll be safe in my home as i am used to wearing them as it was part of safety equipment i had to wear when i worked at a Lead smelter and had to wear them 12 hrs a day .

I would advise every one to start buying them now while you still can because if it does goes airborne there will be a mad rush and supply's will run out then you will be left out in the cold and prob die.

make shore you get the right filters otherwise you will just waste your money .

Seeing two extremes here, one wonders whether or not it will ever end...

Liberia sacks absentee officials

"She said the officials had shown "insensitivity to our national tragedy and disregard for authority". Eight junior officials have also been warned to return to the country, and will not be paid until they do."

"One doctor to treat nearly 100,000 people before Ebola outbreak."

Obama Plans Major Ebola Offensive
More Doctors, Supplies and Portable Hospitals Planned for Africa

WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama plans to dramatically boost the U.S. effort to mitigate the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, including greater involvement of the U.S. military, people familiar with the proposal said.

Mr. Obama is expected to detail the plan during a visit Tuesday to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, these people said. Among the possible moves: sending additional portable hospitals, doctors and health-care experts, providing medical supplies and conducting training for health workers in Liberia and other countries.

Mr. Obama also is expected to urge Congress to approve the request he made last week for an additional $88 million to fund his proposal.

I sure hope that all the help he intends to send are well versed in Ebola protocalls. Otherwise It will spread.
If this currant outbreak can be contained? I would hope the next time Ebola breaks out, That the rest of the world jumps on it with out hesitation.

http://washingtonexaminer.com/cdc-issues-ebola-checklist-now-is-the-time-to-prepare/article/2553396

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, warning hospitals and doctors that “now is the time to prepare,” has issued a six-page Ebola “checklist” to help healthcare workers quickly determine if patients are infected.

While the CDC does not believe that there are new cases of Ebola in the United States, the assumption in the checklist is that it is only a matter of time before the virus hits home

The Checklist.
