Also, some good news in that report... "All 18 rhesus macaques treated with the drug made a complete recovery, in contrast to three other untreated monkeys that quickly fell seriously ill and died." Now if it only works that well on humans. |

Another American Doctor Infected With Ebola, Charity Says Another American missionary doctor working in Liberia has tested positive for Ebola, an aid group said Tuesday. SIM USA said the doctor, who was not named, was treating obstetric patients at ELWA hospital in Monrovia and had not treated Ebola patients in the hospital’s isolation unit, which is separate from the main hospital. The charity said it was not yet known how the doctor was infected, but he immediately isolated himself when he showed symptoms. http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/ebola-virus-outbreak/another-american-doctor-infected-ebola-charity-says-n193911 |

New Ebola Cases Unrelated To West African Outbreak If there can be any good news – or at least not further disheartening news – coming out of the African continent regarding this year’s Ebola outbreaks, we have one positive report this morning. The World Health Organization has just confirmed that the newly-identified cases of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the Democratic Republic of Congo is genetically unrelated to the strain currently circulating in Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria. A WHO collaborating research center in Franceville, Gabon, the Centre International de Recherches Médicales, had previously identified six Ebola positive samples sent to the laboratory. They report today that, “the virus in the Boende district is definitely not derived from the virus strain currently circulating in west Africa.†http://www.forbes.com/sites/davidkroll/2014/09/02/ebola-outbreaks-unrelated-in-west-africa-and-democratic-republic-of-congo/ |

Latest US doc to get Ebola skipped protective gear in 100-degree heat, says colleague JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – The latest U.S. doctor to contract Ebola in Africa was working with outpatients in 100-degree temperatures that made it difficult to wear protective gear when he was exposed to an obstetrics patient stricken with the deadly disease, said another American physician who worked in the same hospital. http://www.foxnews.com/health/2014/09/03/latest-us-doc-get-ebola-skipped-protective-gear-100-degree-heat-says-colleague/ |

WHO: Ebola death toll tops 1,900, surpassing all previous outbreaks combined The death toll from the Ebola epidemic in West Africa has surpassed 1,900 people, the World Health Organization’s chief said Wednesday. Less than a week ago the death toll stood at 1,552 people. More people have now died in the 2014 Ebola epidemic than in all previous outbreaks combined (1,590, according to the WHO). http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/world/wp/2014/09/03/who-ebola-death-toll-tops-1900-surpassing-all-previous-outbreaks-combined/ |

I wish I knew. As far as I know, before the current outbreak in West Africa, there were 6 known strains of ebolavirus (sorted by date of discovery). 1. Zaire-Yambuku (first found in Yambuku, Zaire in 1976) 2. Reston (first found in Reston, Virginia in 1989 at a primate research lab). 3. Cote d'Ivoire (1994) 4. Zaire-Kikwit (1995) 5. Sudan (2000) 6. Bundibugyo (2007) The West Africa current Ebola outbreak is apparently a new strain, so it would be #7. The new outbreak in the Boende district of the DRC is not the new West African strain, and imo is quite likely to be one of the older ones Yambuku or Kikwit being the two most likely. The reason it is called 'good news' is that apparently the West Africa strain has not escaped the cordon into the DRC... yet... But I would not call it good news. Either way, people are dying. |

Seven reasons why this Ebola epidemic spun out of control If you'd asked public-health experts a year ago whether an Ebola outbreak could turn into an epidemic spread across borders, they probably would have confidently told you that there was no way: the virus isn't transmitted very easily, and people usually get so sick and die so quickly, it has little opportunity to infect a new host. http://www.vox.com/2014/9/4/6103039/Seven-reasons-why-this-ebola-virus-outbreak-epidemic-out-of-control Maps, pic's with link. |

Use Ebola survivors' blood - WHO The blood of patients who recover from Ebola should be used to treat others, the World Health Organization has announced. West Africa is facing the largest Ebola outbreak in history and more than 2,000 people have died. A global group of experts have been meeting to assess the experimental therapies that could contain Ebola. The WHO also announced that Ebola vaccines could be used on the frontline by November. http://www.bbc.com/news/health-29084254 |
