Remembering the movie , "Outbreak" scared me to death. The media is all over this story. The disease is a plane ride away. Many people have died from this latest outbreak. :(

Infectious diseases are disorders caused by organisms — such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. Many organisms live in and on our bodies.

Peace Corps pulls volunteers over Ebola outbreak

The Peace Corps announced Wednesday that it was temporarily withdrawing its 340 volunteers in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone after two workers were exposed to the Ebola virus.

A spokeswoman told CNN and CBS News that the pair were being isolated after coming in contact with an infected patient who later died. The two have not exhibited symptoms, however, and will be sent back the United States after doctors clear them.

What Ebola on a Plane Means for the U.S.

Usually Ebola victims get too sick, too quickly to travel—so the disease stays relatively contained. But now that an infected man was able to fly from Liberia to Nigeria, the game has changed.

Liberia shuts schools as Ebola spreads, Peace Corps leaves three countries

Liberia will close schools and consider quarantining some communities, it said on Wednesday, rolling out the toughest measures yet imposed by a West African government to halt the worst outbreak on record of the deadly Ebola virus.

I have been keeping up on that outbreak. 60% fatalites. Does anyone know from where this diasease came from?
And yes it is scary.

Platform for European Preparedness Against (Re-)emerging Epidemics

February 5-7 2014 in Antwerp, Belgium was the kick-off of PREPARE (Platform for European Preparedness Against (Re-)emerging Epidemics), an FP7 project proposal submitted and grantedin response to HEALTH.2013.2.3.3-1. “Clinical management of patients in severe epidemics”. As society becomes more sophisticated, technology-based, urbanised and connected, microbes adapt and find new opportunities. Therefore, infections with epidemic potential remain a threat to human health. Much progress has been made in the design and development of appropriate structures and procedures for rapid and adequate Infectious Diseases (ID) outbreak public health response measures, by national and international health authorities. Likewise, preclinical research responses to severe ID threats and outbreaks by the scientific research community (e.g., epidemiological, microbiological, immunological and genetic research) has also made important progress during the last decade in terms of the ability to respond rapidly.

And yes it is scary.

Its speculated that this strain is carried by bats. So, someone got bitten by a bat.

However, people are acting way to panicky over this. Ebola is extremely deadly yes, but it is also rather easy to contain. There is about one week of incubation before you start exhibiting the symptoms, but during that week you cannot spread the virus to other people. Only after you start developing symptoms, it gets dangerous for others. However, Ebola spreads through contact with fluids, and most people are way to sick to effectively give it to other people. In the West, Ebola has almost no chance to spread.

The reason it is spreading in Africa is because people there are, to say it bluntly, scared, ignorant and stupid when it comes to Ebola. They believe rumors that Western doctors are spreading the virus and they put more trust in traditional medicine men. They hide people who are sick from the doctors or they chase the doctors away. Which means its very difficult to quarantine the people who are sick and as a result the disease keeps spreading.

Ebola (also known as hemorrhagic fever) is believed to be carried by fruitbats (which are not affected by the disease) and monkeys, gorilla's, chimps and duikers, which are. Pigs are also susceptible to it.

It's unfortunately a particularly easy virus to catch. Sweat is not always a "transmitting" bodily fluid with infectious diseases - but it is with this nasty one, so touching someone who is ill is very risky. Masks etc are not a guarantee of protection :(

Men who survive can transmit the disease via their semen for nearly two months. Death rates can be as high as 90 percent :( so I truly admire doctors without borders (and other charitable medical groups) that travel to these countries and help the medical staff within them with caring and treating these patients, often with very poor facilities available to them. They really are heroes.

edit: just spotted Мишель's post. (Hiya :)) The low survival rate unfortunately does spread great fear amongst local people. I think stupid might be a little strong a word :) but ignorance IS rife sadly :(

Further edit (from wiki): Infectious ebolaviruses have NOT yet been isolated from any nonhuman animal, but bats do drop partially eaten fruits and pulp, which mammals such as gorillas and duikers feed on. This suggests viral shedding in the saliva of bats may be how the disease is transmitted. Handling the carcass of an animal that dies as a reult of the infection is the main cause of initial transmission and disease outbreak in humans.

The virus survives on the skin of the dead for a considerable time. Embalming the dead and other funeral traditions can therefore also be a source of infection. The bodies of patients who die under medical care are not released to their loved ones for funeral rites to be performed - and that has contributed to some of the distrust :(

That 90% is for another strain; this one is 60%. Batter Up is pulling out of his association with the Liberian community until this is contained.

Hi there Anniet :)

I dunno, seems pretty stupid to me to stay around someone who is bleeding from all orifices. Anyways, the local governments are now holding massive information campaigns, trying to get people to understand the disease.

The big problem is the funeral tradition consist of the family and other close to the person who died wash the body. They don't used protection of any kind so anybody who was a part of the washing party may be the next to contract Ebola.

CDC: Avoid non-essential travel to Ebola nations

U.S. health officials issued a travel advisory Thursday, urging Americans to avoid non-essential travel to the three countries in West Africa dealing with the Ebola outbreak.

"Ebola is worsening in West Africa," said Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, announcing the level 3 advisory -- its strongest level -- against travel to Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. Frieden said the CDC is sending 50 additional staff to West Africa to advise countries on controlling the disease. "It's the largest, most complex (Ebola) outbreak that we know of in history."

Source: Flight leaves for Liberia to evacuate Americans infected with Ebola

(CNN) -- A U.S.-contracted medical charter flight left Cartersville, Georgia, Thursday to evacuate two American charity workers in Liberia infected with Ebola hemorrhagic fever, a source told CNN.

A CNN crew saw the airplane, a long-range business jet, depart shortly after 5 p.m. ET. The plane matched the description provided by the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

All though you have good bio protection at the CDC is that a good idea to take them back to the states . I would think it would be better to treat them where they got infected and not take any risks no matter how small with a deasease like this with such a high death rate .I know it not air born thank's to Annie explaination but still .

The spanish flu killed millions all tough it was easy to catch , still !!!

Pictures of the plane shown. Why can't the experimental serum, be used in Africa?? Sorry, don't trust the CDC, and our government.

Ebola victims heading to Atlanta: Infected pair controversially airlifted back to U.S. for treatment as hero doctor gives up the only dose of experimental serum for his American colleague

A specially equipped jet reportedly took off from Georgia on Thursday to transport Nancy Writebol and Dr. Kent Brantly to the U.S.
En route the patients will remain inside isolation pods called aeromedical biological containment systems
At least one of the Ebola victims will be treated in a super-high containment facility at Atlanta's Emory University Hospital near the CDC
Brantly, a father-of-two from Fort Worth, Texas, ensured Writebol received the experimental drug instead of him
A small amount of the serum arrived in Liberia Tuesday, the Samaritan's Purse charity said on Wednesday
But on Thursday charity SIM said in a statement that Mrs Writebol's condition had worsened, despite the serum she is taking
Dr Brantly's health also worsened overnight

Seems high risk doesn't it :( And... um... Glenn... erm... :) keep the mask just in case - it can be caught from the air - in water vapour form from breath... the touching risk is in addition to (not instead of) the usual ways of virus transmission.

@Lynn
Why can't the experimental serum, be used in Africa??

Very good question! I do hope it's nothing to do with... if the serum works it'll be a western pharmaceutical company that gets granted the patent... :(

edit: that thought probably belongs in the conspiracy thread. I really do hope the doctors pull through though, and the disease is kept contained.

Because its experimental and they only have a bit of it. Its probably easier to use it on the Americans and control for a wide range of other variables than it is for an African patient.
