Love the squirrel pictures and commentary!

Thank you, Bernie.

Indeed. Thank you.

I had one of the squirrels here at my house taking peanuts from my
hand. I loved it! Then I started letting the cats out. :-( Bye, bye squirrels.

Fur fight

Keep the "runaway" indoors and have him neutered. What's the problem?

Another hungry mouth to feed. :-(

I found this guy actually sharing the food with "my" raccoon. It
suprised me to see them sharing rather than fighting over it. Has anyone
else ever had a similar experience?

Yes. I have regularly observed skunks, raccoons, opossums and our cat to all share food in our back yard without there being any problems.

The only time skunks spray raccoons is when raccoon kits stupidly try to get in a skunk's "personal space".
Even then, I've noticed that raccoon kits have to be VERY persistent in order to get sprayed. Adult raccoons pretty much never get sprayed.

This picture that I found on Google Images shows a skunk giving what looks to be juvenile raccoons (they look a bit too big to be kits) a very mild warning in the form of a puffed tail with the skunk's posterior pointed towards the raccoons. Please notice that the skunk is still eating, as are the raccoons. This skunk is not feeling terribly threatened by the raccoons and these raccoons are not at all concerned about being in close proximity to a skunk. These raccoons are also old enough not to be curious about the skunk. They are all about the food... which tells me that while they look like young raccoons (note the pristine ears), they are old enough to have an "adult raccoon perspective" on skunks.

As far as I can tell, a puffed tail is skunk-ese for "Hey you. Notice me. I'm a skunk." A puffed tail is nothing that worries a raccoon. Based on my observations, adult raccoons seem to understand that a puffed tail is at the very bottom of a skunk's hierarchy of warning behaviors.

The skunk in the foreground of this picture is even less alarmed by the raccoon. The skunk's tail is only partially puffed and the skunk hasn't even bothered to point his posterior in the direction of the raccoon.

Inky, Winky, Blinky and Stinky say, "Don't believe everything you've heard about skunks.
When it comes down to spraying, we're predictable, measured and quite reasonable!!!!"

Never ever seen a live skunk - yet. They seem to be like most animals, "you leave me alone and I'll leave you alone, we all have to survive".

I was at work and walked outside through a open door. I did not look down. Should have. I walked right next to a skunk on me way through the doorway. Just as close as the raccoons were. I am glad the skunk had the safety lock on. I was on my way back inside when I finally saw it. Bushy tail in the air, hand standing on front paws and pointed my way. I stopped and imitated a statue and waited for it to go away. Then I went inside and closed the door.

Oops. I meant to post this in the Rocky's thread. But since Angela says nothing is off topic here, I'll let it stay.
