Bad man, imho. Although, I suppose it was common in "the olden days," and probably still is in places where poor folks live, like some parts of the Appalachian mountains. http://www.myfoxny.com/story/26811862/man-eating-raccoons ~Sue~ |

Leg traps are not uncommon in northern Wisconsin where, sadly, raccoon pelts are collected and sold and seem to have some value. We are an omnivorous species, and since I eat meat and own some shoes made of leather, I do not feel that I can pass judgement on somebody who eats raccoons and squirrels. I would actually be a bit worried about eating raccoons, just from a roundworm perspective. Cooking raccoon meat thoroughly probably kills the worms and their eggs, but I would guess that there is still a chance of contamination in the butchering process. Seems like a bad idea to me. In this country at least, there are easier ways to get protein than trapping and eating squirrels and raccoons. |

How come leaves always fall wrong Maybe Ig Nobel knows:) http://www.improbable.com/ig/2014/ The 2014 Ig Nobel Prizes were awarded on Thursday night, September 18th, 2014 at the 24th First Annual Ig Nobel Prize Ceremony, at Harvard's Sanders Theatre. The ceremony was webcast live. PHYSICS PRIZE [JAPAN]: Kiyoshi Mabuchi, Kensei Tanaka, Daichi Uchijima and Rina Sakai, for measuring the amount of friction between a shoe and a banana skin, and between a banana skin and the floor, when a person steps on a banana skin that's on the floor. |

I really HATE the concept of Ig Nobels!!! Yes, the awards all sound silly on the surface, but there is more than enough science-bashing in our culture already and frankly I am sick of it. Basic research often sounds funny out of context, but basic research can lead to huge advances in a field of study. Eric and one of his long-term research partners, Dr. Shauna Sallman, recently submitted an article to a reputable journal that, taken out of context, sounds silly and frivolous. I know exactly how silly it sounds because I had the pleasure of proof-reading one of the drafts. The article is currently being peer reviewed and Eric and Shauna are both fairly sure that it will eventually be published. For nearly a year now, Eric and Shauna have been laughing about being likely candidates for an Ig Nobel Prize next year. Yes, they are teasing, but the potential for ridicule did make both of them think twice about exploring this idea and eventually submitting their article for publication. It would have been a SHAME not to share this good and interesting idea with other astronomers just out of a fear of ridicule. I am proud of Eric and Shauna for being bigger than that! As for slipping on a banana peel, yes it sounds like measuring friction in this context is a silly idea, but in figuring out how to do so in a valid and reliable manner, perhaps the researchers advanced their field in some way? I am not a physicist, so I can't judge, and I don't think the rest of us unqualified folks should judge either!!! |

Today I went for a walk in a local park, that has a beautiful waterfall. And really tame squirrels. And I mean really tame They even help themselves. Possibly in the abscence of raccoons here in the UK, squirrels are a good replacement. |

Today I went for a walk in a local park, that has a beautiful waterfall. Great photos, Bernie! When I was in Monterey, CA, I enjoyed feeding the very tame squirrels there, too. I used to have a picture where the squirrel was up on my knee reaching up for a peanut, which I was holding just out of reach. (I wish I could find that photo.) ~Sue~ |
