Nice tree Dena:) Looks really dry over there...

Yes, but the tree belongs in the neighbors yard, not mine. The average rain fall is around 7 inches a year and we have been a bit below that lately. Most people avoid grass and put in yards that require little water. I have about 3 inches of gravel in the back yard and spray any weeds that survive the low water and gravel. Other than the citrus and the garden, all the other plants are on a timer which gives them no more than 3 gallons of water a week. The citrus and garden require more water but none of it is wasted.

Native plants have extensive root systems with a good deal of spacing between plants. We tend to bunch them up in our yards so additional water is needed to keep them alive.

Where I live is considered part of the Western Mojave Desert, 10 inches is what the rainfall is supposed to be per year. Of course in a drought all bets are off.

In Krasnoyarsk park "Swarms stream" in Russia a competition took place at the speed of laundry raccoon.
The championship under the slogan "I love raccoon", took part a couple of raccoons - Masha and Artem. The animals were given a basin of water and a few old things. Judges were visitors and employees of the park, which eventually declared a draw.
First Masha tried to ward off his rival from the pelvis of water, rather than letting it wash. Zoo workers had to intervene so both could do their laundry.

Angela,

You'll be pleased to know that 20-24 of the California quail live in our backyard. They migrate to our neighbors yard and back again. They've been here for many years. Before Sheba passed away; one year Sheba did get three little one's, but not before or since, and Sheba passed away in January of 2011 making these birds even safer here.

It looks mighty thin. (At least, compared to the ones I see in
my backyard.) (And my dining room.)

Which is probably what made it brave (or desperate) enough to go out in public.

Hey Folks,

I've decided to swallow my pride and beg for money to help
me care for three feral kittens I scooped up. They all have
the eye mucus problem that is probably an upper respiratory
infection and need medical attention.

If you're inclined to help, here's a link to my fundraiser:
http://fundly.com/help-with-feral-kittens

There is a detailed description there about what I'll use the
funds for. I promise you can trust me.

(I hope the forum moderators don't mind my posting this. If
I've broken some rule, I apologize in advance.)

You are not promoting a commercial venture, so I think it's OK.

Angela has said repeatedly that nothing is off-topic in this thread, and as Mark points out, you are not shilling for a commercial endeavour, so you are okay as far as I can see.

I would take them, but I just don't have the funds to get them here.

Not an open invite, just for Suzie-Q.

That raccoon picture is not of a skinny adult raccoon. It is a raccoon kit!!! Please note the little darling's proportions. They are perfect.

Skinny, sick, under-fed adult raccoons have big heads, adult limb lengths and long adult tails on skinny bodies. This baby looks as a baby should... adorable and perfect in every way!!!

And Suzie-Q I have no problem with your request in the Critter Cafe to help fund the medical treatment of the kittens you have found. In fact, I can think of no better venue to post it than a place where Critter People gather. I see that you set the "default" request to $35, and so with that Eric and I were happy to start off your campaign yesterday. Wishing you the best of success!

And now we are 3. Tried to donate Saturday evening (would have been first), but got the spinning pinwheel and a "Done but errors on page" message when I hit "Submit". Tried again today, got same result on both XP/IE-8 boxes. So I go try on one of my Mac G4s running Safari - and it goes right through. Go figure.

Thank you Donald. You are a very nice man.

I do what I can. I also have 3 semi-feral cats living in my yard, plus several neighborhood cats that visit regularly and dine at my kitty restaurant. Only one will come to me and let me rub her, but the others seem to recognize my voice, and will let me get within arm's length before they move away. So I know what Suzie is dealing with. Plus, her fundly page says she's an Army veteran, and we vets take care of our own.....
