Message 1554305 - Posted: 9 Aug 2014, 17:21:22 UTC - in response to Message 1554299.

Thank you Deana. Since James started the original thread & with reading what many posted, I often wanted to post on a particular event, but felt too embarrassed & indeed some days ashamed to as I felt that being the age I am, should show maturity.

However, bit busy atm & when finished need to gather my thoughts.

No pressure on this thread. When you are ready, there will be others waiting to provide whatever help they can. A group environment is not for everybody and just because it worked for me, there are others who it's not right for. It's not important how you get help so long as you find help that puts your troubles behind you. My initial post on this thread was to educate others on the help that is available should this thread not be the solution they desire.

Age and maturity has nothing to do with major emotional damage. I have heard stories of elderly people who have lost their life long spouse and lose the ability to function for the remainder of their life. If they had better support or possibly professional assistance, they would have been able to enjoy the few years they had left.

Others face problems they just are unable to deal with. Life can result in problems that are beyond the ability for a single person to overcome. In those cases, it's not a weakness to ask for help. Help may not always come in the expected form but many people are willing to do what they can.

I don't know if I can help you personally or you just need to talk it out, but I can be contacted by PM if you think I can do some good.

Again thank you. Over the past 12 months I've received much help, advice, support amidst much blushing as I was told things I never realised about myself or even though about.

The most amazing thing about it all though was all that support came from women. Throughout my life, found it easy as well as comfortable to talk freely to women without any thoughts pertaining to "that topic" which rears it's head when the two sexes get together.

I have one or two friends in particular who try to get a laugh out of every situation. It is their way of providing support, but I think they are very in need of addressing their own issues because not everything in life can or should be laughed off.

+200 :)

And there is that bit that comes every once in a while when it's possible to do both at the same time...

If I've gone a bit quiet it's because I'm stuck in a REALLY STUPID black fog of my own making. (Grrrr, anniet!)

Taking my son for genetic tests on Thursday to find out if he has inherited the same kidney disease as my daughter. Knew it was coming - just spent so much time trying to make sure everyone was prepared for it, I forgot to prepare myself. Talk about an idiot :/

Not to worry though... I AM lurking - on and off - much like my broadband :) and am still enjoying all your lovely company :)

Good luck Annie. I hope for the best, that he doesn't have it, but if he does - we're here to support you. :-)

Not idiot - more like typical Mother - taking care of everybody else first.

And I, for one, enjoy yours as well. And whatever the tests show, we're here for you.

Awwwww :) thank you everyone, you're all so sweet :)

I don't know how long it will take before the results come back :/ but they know the exact version of the gene they're looking for so I suppose that speeds things up. Oh well :) sneaked coffee break over - best go see whether my mum has put her dress on backwards and inside out again :)

I'll start shoveling some coal into the boiler to get the virtual hug machine up to steam :) Best of luck with the tests Anniet.

Depending on the genetic test and how busy the lab is, it could take a few hours to several days. When I worked for the agency testing for Tristeza virus in citrus trees, the leaf stems had to be frozen for at least 8 hours, them it took 48 hours once the frozen stems were pulverized until we had results.

8 weeks :( Will have to bury my head in the sand for at least six of them or there's a real risk the virtual hug machine will go the same way as my last monitor... :)

Bit of an ideological battle with my other half to avoid too *start shovelling vaguely anniet head-sized hole* In one way he's right, by encouraging my son to follow the medical advice and have the test, I've potentially made it impossible (or at least very difficult) *plant head* for him to get a mortgage, life insurance and even a job :/ *distant muffled voice* Of course he delayed pointing that out till after we got home :(

8 weeks?! Wow. I will be here through that, Annie, as will many others here. Don't worry. :~)

How would having the test affect future job opportunities for him? Sorry if I'm naïve and clueless; I just don't understand that.

If the tests show he carries the genetic defect, that information must be disclosed when applying for insurance (pre-existing medical condition), which could affect the cost or availability of a suitable health-care or life-insurance policy.

Depending on what Labor Laws apply, the condition may have to be disclosed to, and could be disqualifying for, some employers or specific jobs.

Having a family history of a particular disorder, but not knowinig you carry it, may be an issue, but not neccessarily disqualifying. Knowing you carry the gene invokes a duty to disclose when properly asked.

But as Chris points out, if you reasonably could or should have known, when the condition presents itself, fraud can be alleged, and the contracts terminated, leaving one without job, home, or life insurance when it is most needed.
