Toady is the official start of the Silly Season, and judging by what I can see on most threads around here it is about right on cue!

I've never heard of this phenomenon. In reading the associated names for it, I don't know why the noble pickle has been chosen as it's mascot.

Here in California it's in November, every year, it's called an election.

In US politics and lifestyle, the silly season is a period from early summer until the first week of October of election years. Primary elections are over at this time, but formal debates have not started and the general election is still many weeks away.

Trust California to be different to the rest of the USA!

Issues raised during this period are likely to be forgotten by the election, so candidates may rely on frivolous political posturing and hyperbole to get media attention and raise money.

Looks like the silly season all the time in a certain thread then!

Yep, seeing as much of the frivolous political posturing and hyperbole tends to appear in the silly season itself...

In case anyone gets worried this is NOT a return to Politics.

42 hours later...

If 142 Israelis and 154 Arabs are fighting over 69 acres of land for 5 days, who won? To get the answer, you multiply 14215469 by 5, turn the calculator upside down.

In the Europe thread, how silly when there is an Israel/Palestine thread.

Is this the sort of thing you mean? :) Not that I think it's silly at all - as my twin and I regularly did the same with shongolola's... though we never put flags on their backs...

Hi Anniet. You mean African millipedes? Yep, when there isn't much real news about the media turn to frivolous stories to earn a crust.

Yep :) posted a picture of one in the bug thread awhile ago... if they decide to get a wiggle on, they're MUCH faster than snails :)

Mine reads "SHELLOIL"
Which does me no good, as I have stock in Exxon and Chevron but not Royal Dutch/Shell

I also get Shelloil out of it. (For what it's worth.)

Yep, it is supposed to say shell oil. Just one of those little games we used to play in the 80's.

Big Bertha had a bra size of 69 (enter 69 on the calculator) and it was just too, too, too (enter 222) big. So the doctor gave her 51 (enter 51) pills to take 8 times (enter "x 8") a day, and she became ...... (Turn calculator upside down). Which is apparently hysterically funny to third grade boys world-wide.

Then there is the famous Australian cricket star 337717

There is probably more. Yep the silly season :-)

:) Expensive lapse. I have a cat that likes to run off with my watch when I'm in the bath and then bury it in the litter tray. Minx! :/

I am happy to report that here in Canada
we have no "Silly Season". The heavy price
we pay up here for the shear joy of living
here in our "Happy ever after Land" is, we
gave up silly.
