And my thanks go out to the Seti 'boyz in da lab', who responded to my request for more MB splitters to make sure there was enough work to meet the increased demand.

Thank you, Eric, Matt, and Jeff.

Many meows for you!

Well, when one is in possession of more computers than anybody else, they win, I guess.
I am still wondering just who he is, or whose pockets he is digging into.

Just curiosity, a very fine contribution to the project's crunching.

Stand up and talk to us, Charles./

Yep, curious minds want to know :)

Charles Long did process almost 37% of the credits during Wow!-Event 2014.

Very Curious indeed :)

It was my first WOW event. I came in 2nd for my team, and 30th for my group. :-)

I will be joining next year, for sure.

Greetings WezH,

Am I correct in assuming that for Charles to win the individual award, he had to physically join the event himself?

If that is correct, why won't he communicate with those here asking him too? There is no logic in him hiding from us, but NOT an event like the Wow! event.

Speak to us Charles! :)

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

Yes I would like him/her/alien to keep on BOINCing, but only if he/she/alien has rights to do it.

I think it was completely unfair for Charles Long to enter the WOW event as an individual.

I have tested other projects, such as asteroidsathome with all of the same global settings (and none of the app settings) and I get a full 16 concurrent tasks on 16 core systems. As that this is meant as a positive way to load test systems, only running on half the cores is counter to that goal. If there is no fix, I'll have to switch away from implementing Seti in our datacenters across the board.

If he is running dozens of 16 core machines in datacentres then that would explain why he wins every competition and leaderboard that is going. He is not competing on a level playing field and that is unfair to the rest of us. I hope he has permission to do that. Remember Nez?

Hi Chris,

Here is something interesting. I found this which was posted in the Q&A forum for "Macintosh:Increase the number of concurrent tasks beyond 8", posted 69 days ago from today's date:

So, it would appear that he is indeed using SETI to load test computer banks in a data center. And yes, I feel that he should be disqualified in the Wow! Event competition. It was not fair to all other contestants, whether individual, team or group.

He's been on SETI for a year and already has 578+ million credits. I've been doing BOINC for 9 or 10 years and am just under 5 million.

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

Maybe they should have a data center catagory for next year, Problem solved.
But then again maybe he owns every machine in that data center. Without a clarafication from him stateing otherwise we are all guessing.

And why all this harping? This year would have broken last years total any way with out his input.
This was my first year participating in the WOW Event. It wont be my last, Unless it gets down to egos and bragging rights.

Complete agreement here.

Is the goal the event or the project?
If the goal is the project then Charles Long is a winner even if he quits today.
If the goal is the contest then he has a noncompetitive advantage.
Personally I'm here to help process data and I view his contribution to be very good.

If I was to win the lotto,I would build some serious crunching machines. Would that make me an unwelcome participant in the WOW event? Or to even crunch SETI@ Home? Would the Raccoon lovers kick me off the team because I had an unfair advantage?

IMHO its only unfair if he does not have permission to run SETI@Home on those computers.
And if next year they do have a data center category, Maybe IBM or some other super computer users might donate some computer time to WOW and give some competion to the current champ.
So if any of you have connections with any kind of group who uses super computers, Start greasing those contacts.

I think he had every right to participate in WOW. Just as he has every right to participate in Seti.
It was only unfair when at the onset, all individuals with no team affiliation were lumped into a team named 'no team'. That was not fair, and when brought up the WOW admins, they disbanded 'no team'.
So at that point Mr. Long was participating as an individual. An individual who either owns or has access to some large datacenter server clusters. He who has the most toys wins.

Now personally, I could go the sour grapes route, because he took away from me a chance to rise to the #2 Seti user based on all time credits. Which was a goal of mine. But, so be it, I'm not real miffed about it.

In the meantime, as long as he chooses to keep it up, Mr. Long is contributing a great deal of crunching power to the Seti project.

And for that I have to respect him.

The "No Team" team still exists. It was just removed from the ranking.

It was mentioned from one of the admins that perhaps next year there could be some kind of separate group for such users & to submit any ideas via their site. Perhaps some sort of tiered grouping could be thought up. Like in an open track day auto race. Everyone is on the track at the same time, but you are really only competing with others in your class. How to decide on such groupings would be the real question.

I have no sour grapes with him either. Im glad he wanted to join in. To me that shows a commitment. To SETI and the WOW event.
As this is just the 3rd year for the WOW event growing pains will happen. And I predict next year will be even bigger.

I salute SETI@Germany for doing this.
As this is my first event, I dont have a lot to say, But Im sure if a differant catagory is made for data centers, Maybe that would be the answer?
