You ever heard of IFF? Perhaps. But how close to the BUKs need the controlling radar be to operate them? Satellite link or Radiolink (most likely) from Russian soil would do the trick! But how close to the BUKs need the controlling radar be to operate them?"The Great Satan" didn't pickup a controlling radar. That lone launcher was operating on its own. The only questin unanswered is who pulled the trigger.

Perhaps. But how close to the BUKs need the controlling radar be to operate them? They don't need a "controlling radar" to operate. Their targeting radar works just fine. You only use a "controlling radar" if you care about IFF. Which might 'splain why Tsar Putin has suddenly decided to pull the BUK's back inside mother Russia. Of course an airliner will identify as unknown or enemy, not friend.

This info has been on the wiki since day one The fact is that an SA-11 (BUK)working alone will NOT use IFF to identify any target it needs the "TAR" or target accusation radar unit to be able to use IFF. As far as anyone can tell no TAR units were operational at the time, so the TELAR (SA-11 BUK)was quite able to lock on but did not have the IFF ident available. |

Yes leading to the conclusion that they didn't actually realise that normal international passenger flights would be in their airspace. Just means that all along they thought they were targeting a Ukrainian military plane. Not sure they would have wanted to have the world looking closely at them, as Russia might just get jumpy and scale down support, Which I suspect they have done, no more BUK's. |

This was still within the approved route but it fooled the rebels. The only question is did Russian special forces pull the trigger. This we will most likely never know even if the US has a picture of who did it as that would give them too much information about capability. Still the stories keep comming; 2 Ukrainian Fighter Jets Shot Down as Conflict Intensifies The US would know if this were true.

The rebels said it was shoulder fired missiles. IF it was air to air that has to be Russia; Putin wouldn't be that stupid.
