Because the people who call the shots on both sides do not stand to benefit from any cease fire. So neither side has a real need to commit to any cease fire. Sadly, the innocent civilians are caught in the middle of this.

Like I said, the people who are calling the shots don't stand to benefit from solving things like that.

Look don't be fooled by what either Hamas or Israel says. Israel is not really interested in destroying Hamas. Why? Well, look at how the people in power benefit. In a few weeks, the government's approval ratings are skyrocketing. Who is now still talking about the fact that many Israelis cannot afford housing? Or what they are doing to all the immigrants from Africa they are deporting from the country? Or even the fact that some Jewish extremists kidnapped and tortured some Palestinian kid before burning him alive and Israels subsequent crappy response? By the time this conflict ends in a few weeks, everyone will have forgotten about all those things. And you can be sure that after this, Israels supporters will write Israel a big fat check. Its not even Israels tax payers that are paying for this conflict, it are American and European taxpayers that do.

And Hamas? Do you really think they have any interest in actually destroying Israel? Of course not, thats just talk. But by provoking Israel in wide scale destruction and killing, they will ensure that money and materials will be send into Gaza after this is over, which they can impound and use for their own purposes. And all the young men who lost their families and friends, and whose culture pushes them into screaming for vengeance. Easy targets for Hamas recruiters.

See how by using military force, both Israel and Hamas are keeping the dynamic of this conflict going? This just goes to show, that this problem cannot be solved through violence, but that the ones in power benefit from the conflict and are thus unlikely to change it.

And here are some bananas :) There are a lot out there, but you have to really look for them :/ I will cite just a couple of examples (in addition to those you've raised above) because in many ways this gorilla may need a thread of it's own (given how bound and tied and gagged it is). Okay... this is basically the issue... the people are protesting... but their governments are not.

As a result, several African members of the UN Security Council, including Cameroon, Guinea and Angola, were virtually held to ransom when the United States was seeking council support for the war in 2003. The message was clear: either they voted with the US or they lost their trade privileges.

Approximately one-third of US foreign aid is shared between Israel and Egypt... much of it in the form of "military credits" for foreign militaries to buy US weapons and equipment.

Of course - soon into this little bit of digging I came across a link to a specific and up-to-date page (within The U.S. Agency for International Development website) that looked like it would be a real fountain of knowledge with regards the breakdown of US aid by country and type and conditions and how it might be muzzling some nations - but it has, weirdly, disappeared. *disappointed blinking* Such a shame :( Seems to have gone the same way as that blog Hev was talking about. also wonder if that "storage" is even a US facility, Wiki only lists one US base in Israel and sat photos don't show revetments for $1B in weapons storage there. It does show some pretty tall antenna masts.

Israel has a very large munitions industry itself so it really doesn't have to rely on outside suppliers.
