As long as the results are valid. The boost to the project should be appreciated. It is appreciated. But it should aslo be in another catergory. Now we all know The Nez story. But so far its just us individual crunchers who have been competing for bragging rights. And I have no regrets being way down on that list. We do what we can afford. But on the other hand, The data center crunching should have its own listing. Im thinking the guy has the blessing of his boss. But, If i ever win the mega millions, I will have a farm that will make him look like a piker. [/quote] Old James |

As long as the results are valid. The boost to the project should be appreciated. I think you'll find that my statement agrees with that. However, your reply has highlighted the glaring issue with Boinc & all projects. If it is all about the science, just why was the credit system instigated? The Seti Classic method would have been good enough. Introducing a system which not only has no monetary value but is highly competitive was bound to produce issues as seen over the years. Nez & now Mr Long has shown the flaws in that system, 1 illegal & 1 legal & let's not forget the cheating that has occurred in the past. Also, let's not forget that the projects themselves are not innocent of any wrongdoing. In light of what is happening, the statement that it's all about the science will only put off decent crunchers who do care. We know technology is a fast moving world, just look back a few years, GPU crunching was unheard of. If left unchecked, there'll come a day when the individual cruncher will be no longer needed & all for the sake of the science... ...I'll bet though that they would not say no to our funding! |

Well the reason for even having us volunteers in the first place is because of the amount of processing that is needed for the project to do its thing. Because they run on a very small budget, and most of the hardware is donated, there's not really a whole lot the project can do but to just accept anyone who is willing to contribute. If the project had exclusive access (and the funds to do so), they would just have their own access to what Mr. Long has access to, and we wouldn't be needed at all. I guess if you look back on some of the hurdles this project was facing just a few short years ago--even with GPUs and fast multi-core CPUs--Mr. Long is contributing more than just the science.. he is showing that the servers can handle the immense load that he is putting on the system. Before the upgraded servers and the move to the co-location facility, he would have absolutely crippled the project, since we were just about doing that already at the time. So in a way, he's proving that the servers can handle such a load, and he's proving that the BOINC system as a whole can work on such a large scale. We're all just really hoping he has permission and authorization to do what he's doing. It won't invalidate the science, but it does cause some bad PR, and nobody wants bad PR. Speaking of number crunching, can someone please explain why my average work done for Seti@home is dropping right off?? It's basically flatlined since the start of September. My average was about 1000, it's now 200. Is it because I use a ATI GPU? Thanks |

Congratz Charles on obtaining No.1 spot. ;-) Congrats indeed! I'd hate to get your power bill!! LOL. Electricity prices here in Aus is what limits my BOINC time. |

Hmmm firstly, thank you for replying. Doesn't BOINC automatically download tasks? I split my pc across 4 projects and assumed the tasks were all random? I certainly haven't changed anything since installing BOINC. Regards Andrew |

Hmmm firstly, thank you for replying. The way you split processing time between projects will determine how much credit you get for each project. Unfortunately not all projects pay the same amount of credit so you will get more credit for less time on some projects, and less credit for more time on others. The more projects you do, assuming an even split of time to each, the less credit you will get for Seti as you will spend more time on other projects & less on Seti. Your average credit for Seti is 195, 645 for Milkyway, 1107 for Einstein, 1209 for Skynet. If you want to do more Seti work than other projects, you need to change your preferences to make it so. Even though Charles' RAC has dropped a lot lately he's still the 1st to pass 1,000,000,000 cobblestones mark (not bad for just under 15 months of crunching). Congratz Charles. Cheers. |

Let's see, at my current rate, I might reach that milestone sometime in the year 2040....that is, if they let me keep running my machines in the old f[olks|ogeys|ellas|arts] home! |

According to allprojectstats.com I wouldn't get there a little sooner, but just. Your current goal is: 1,000,000,000 Sometimes I like to set goals for myself to see if I can eek out a bit more oomph from my machines. Right now I have a goal set for 125,000,000 with an estimated date of December 7th. So I'm trying to get there before December 1st. I have more machines I could simply throws at the project, but I would rather do it through tuning and tweaking. Now that I've had a taste of being in the Top Ten, I want more, more, more!!! (Just teasing, of course. I would enjoy being a member of Team Raccoon Lovers no matter where our team ranking fell.) |

Maybe if someone has really deep enough pockets they could get this setup and just maybe take that top spot from Charles Long... Highlights:
