There is a meme on Facebook with the following math problem:

1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1x0+1=?

A couple of my friends said 12. I said 12. Then another friend came along and said 1. We argued about it and then she changed her answer to 0. She tried every way she could to tell me that anything times zero equals zero. I tried every way I could to tell her that order of operations says you do the 1x0 first, then add all the other 1s. She says order of operations doesn't apply.

Some of the comments where the meme was originally posted are really nasty. One of the milder ones says "if you think the answer is anything other than 12, don't help your kids with their math homework."

I was taught to use the acronym BODMAS when multiple signs are in use.

B=brackets
O=of
D=division
M=multiplication
A=addition
S=subraction

so I make the answer = 12
.

equation with the object of having to correctly assign, to it, the brackets?
i.e. the math question was, "Assign the brackets".

I come up with 160, too, and I did watch the math video. I love people with a passion. I was lucky to have a few very good math teachers in high school who truly wanted everyone to "get it", and tailored their instructions to fit everybody's needs. Most of us ended up with A's in the classes because of those teachers. I wasn't gifted in math, but I was taught methods that made sense to me at the time. Math itself may be black and white, but the method of instruction is many shades of gray, and some caring teachers take the time and know how to find where each student is on the spectrum.
