Hi, l am having a similar problem with BOINC 7.2.42, when l am on the PC doing stuff l have no problem, but once l leave my Pc for a few minutes then come back, my screen has gone black, sometimes with taskbar still showing and mouse cursor, but l cannot get out of it, l try alt tab, crl alt del, nothing works, it seems everything is still working in back ground hard drive lights still working, keyboard is not locked out. The only way l can out of it is to use reset button to restart PC. I also noticed l normally have 6 to 8 job units, but of late with this problem l have like triple that figure for work units waiting to be done.

Screen saver is turned off, and all other power settings are all turned off.
once l kill bonic from running system stays stable.

I7 950, 6GB RAM, AMD Radeon HD 5800 series, Windows 7 64Bit.

I have a similar problem with my AMD HD6850, but there it's worse as each time I try to upgrade the AMD Catalyst drivers, when I uninstall the old ones, the whole screen goes black. The only thing slightly visible is the mouse-pointer. But it's unworkable, as even when you remember where everything was, it's impossible to navigate with.

I am sure it's a problem with the videocard itself, as it only happens when I uninstall drivers. I have to install the newer drivers in Windows Safe Mode. And since that's quite a hassle, I almost never use that videocard anymore, even though it should go into my TV server.

Anyway, having said all that, I suspect you have a similar problem. I see that you allowed BOINC to use the AMD GPU to do calculations. So it's probably something there that does this, memory on the card, something on or in the GPU, a wire on the PCB that when it heats up stops making contact, something like that. Absolutely nothing you can do about that, bar change videocard.

Or if you're skint, in this case, not allow BOINC to use the GPU. Go to the project preferences, edit them, uncheck "Use AMD GPU?" and save changes. Next open BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Projects tab->Select Seti->Update. That gets the new prefs in.

Then you can go to the Tasks tab and abort all the work for the GPU, or allow it all to run to finish (and sit through black screens).

This has only started to happen since l loaded the new boinc, l have no other problems with my PC and not with my graphics card, as when l kill everything boinc from running, my system is fine.

Message 1533619 - Posted: 29 Jun 2014, 10:39:22 UTC - in response to Message 1533606.

But the thing is, BOINC itself doesn't use your GPU. It merely detects what kind of GPU you have and tells the project that it has detected GPU such and so and will ask for work for it and store that in cache. The project will then use that GPU, if and when it has an application capable of using that GPU (fine tuned to Nvidia, Intel or AMD GPU), running the work stored in cache.

You then have the option to tell the project to use the GPU or not, by going into the Project preferences and stating that you do or don't want the project to use the AMD, Nvidia or Intel GPU. The project will then tell BOINC what your decision about that is, after which BOINC will ask or not ask work for that resource, so that the project application can run it.

BOINC is only the managing framework. It does no science of its own.
Of course, by disabling BOINC, no project applications will run.

Now, just saying that since you installed 'the new BOINC' without giving information as to what your old BOINC was, isn't too helpful. If you want us to compare the two, then at least mention what you had before as well, as we don't know that.

Also know that the project added a new science application for GPUs without CAL support on the 14th of June, and that your GPU has been running that application (opencl_ati_nocal), so it could be a problem with that application on your hardware.

Your task list there shows you ran the opencl_ati5_cat132 application back in May on BOINC 7.2.42. Since you only chose to complain about it now, I assume that your problem is with the new Seti application.

The NOCAL application should only be sent to GPUs that have no internal CAL support any longer and that use AMD Catalyst drivers without CAL support (13.9 and above, if I am not mistaken). Which begs the question, which drivers are you using? I see from the OpenCL driver version (driver: 1.4.1848) that it's at least 13.9, which may be a problem on older cards.

Could you please post your start-up messages, so we can see if BOINC is detecting that your GPU is CAL capable? The first 30-40 lines after a BOINC start will do.

What happens when you try to go back to Catalyst 13.4? Remember, you don't really have to have the bleeding edge on the newest drivers for your videocard. Not unless you have the bleeding edge of the newest videocards.

Thanks for helping me and thank you for your time, my old ver was boinc_7.2.33_windows_x86_64, and l never had a problem, until l upgraded. My settings in Boinc have not change for many years since I started doing SETI.
I did not know about new science application, l thought as l only do SETI that's all my Boinc does, with my task list for May and not sending a complaint, l did not know my PC was doing this and l have been trying to find out what my problem was once l found out. So l would say this new project that might be using my graphics card GPU could be the problem so if l turn it off, l might not have this problem, As l suffer from a chronic illness and very ill atm, l will try to do it tomorrow to see. You asked me for my start-up messages is that my Event Log which l posted below.
Under my projects page l only have SETI in there.

Thank you for the information. Especially that of the start-up messages as it showed me something that helped me writing an email to the administration of this project.

I still believe the problem to be with the wrong application being sent to your system, but we.. no, you can only test that by continuing to get work for the GPU. I fully understand if you want to opt out at the projects preferences page (set "Use AMD GPU" to No), however on the other side, now that I have written to the administration, they may want you to continue as well. So totally no pressure. :)

Your system is thus far the only I have found where BOINC shows that it has detected that the GPU is CAL capable, yet the server is sending you the NoCAL application anyway. The administration may want to look into that, and change it so it does what it says on the tin - only send this application to AMD GPUs that say they support only OpenCL, no CAL.

What your system should try to do is run the older opencl_ati5_cat132 and then see if you still have the black screens. Until a change is made that your system (and others out there) no longer get the NoCAL application, but instead one of the others that are good for their system, we have no way of knowing for sure what causes it. May well be that the other application also causes the black screens, especially when something on the videocard is damaged. They don't have eternal life.

Message 1536038 - Posted: 4 Jul 2014, 17:35:56 UTC

This issue recently reared itself on my second system as well. Recently my little brother gave me his old computer and I set it up to only do SETI@home.

I have Windows 7, 64bit, a Radeon HD 5850, with the 9.12 driver, 4 GB DDR1 RAM, and an overclocked processor that was stable for 3 years while my brother used it. Thus, I have no belief that it is the computer itself. The power source I tested and it seems to work fine and all voltages are within a comfortable +/- range.

Using the process of elimination, I did the following:

1) Tried updating my drivers using the Catalyst application (this made it worse and nigh impossible to use my system, it was only by forcing windows to do a reset to a prior safe configuration was I able to get it back, I almost had to do a complete system wipe!). So, inconclusive whether it was the driver's fault.

2) Power supply. I thought perhaps the old power supply was going kaput, as the unit was well beyond the MTBF lifetime defined by the manufacturer (Antec). But I tried using the power supply in another computer with similar specifications and it worked just fine. I then thought perhaps it was my brother's MOBO or something. So I switched to another power supply. Nope. Able to do other tasks just fine. So it's not the power supply or the MOBO interface.

3) Then I thought it might be the graphics card itself. Plugged it into another computer. No problems. Not the card itself.

4) Then I thought it might be the processor or memory. So I stress tested the processor and memory using MemTest and prime number generators for 48 hours. No problems. Not the CPU or memory, even overclocked.

5) Then I started messing with the SETI@home tasks. This is where I made the discovery...

Apparently, AstroPulse applications work just fine.

BUT!!! SETI@HOME V7 TASKS CRASH THE VIDEO DRIVER!

My video card is registered as CAL but I'm getting no-Cal tasks.

Thus my conclusion: the SETI@home v7 tasks are the culprit and someone at SETI@home should resolve the issue with doling out CAL/noCAL tasks, and maybe look at whether older video cards' task settings need to be rolled back.

Here is a copy/pasta of my event log:

As a quick update ...

The GPU works just fine on Einstein@home. Thus, I can only conclude the SETI@home v7 GPU applications do NOT work on Radeon HD GPUs. I've created an app_info.xml file to override the preferences on work sharing and aborted all my v7 GPU applications on that other computer, at least until the SETI@home folks can figure this out.

Okay, the 'normal' Seti v7 OpenCL applications work fine on AMD cards. I certainly don't have a problem with them. But the one NoCAL application seemed to be causing all this trouble for you and the original poster (and probably a lot more people). Until the administrator can find out what's causing this, he has retracted the NoCAL application.

To esker_curve, Your card is a Radeon HD 5850 mine is the Radeon HD 5870, so l think its our older cards with Boinc and SETI that might be the problem.

An update, I set Boinc(SETI) under Activity and Suspended my GPU for the time being and it is now stable. I do not know if the administrator retracting the NoCAL application has made it stable or me Suspending my GPU or both together.

One question I would like to ask is, Does my Boinc-SETI still process my projects and jobs just using my CPU now since l Suspended my GPU.?

Thank you for your time and effort. Paul. :D

That could very well be ...

Another thing I forgot to mention was that I was messing with setting up an app_info.xml that I wanted to have it try to juggle two GPU tasks at once, just like what my other computer can do with the CUDA GPU.

Well ... I just set the app_info for this computer to be 1 CPU and 1 GPU for each SETI@home v7 task. And I see the GPU load is at a whopping 80% average.

If this just turned out to be (L)user error, boy will I feel sheepish.

There are CPU and GPU tasks assigned by SETI@home. If you have disabled your GPU capability, then you will process the CPU tasks the project assigns. GPU tasks are specialized for the particular GPU model and drivers, etc.

I'd like to mention that I have the exact same symptoms with a very different configuration; i7 4770K, 16GB RAM, Radeon HD 7850 and Intel HD 4600, Windows 8.1 64-bit. When I do not allow BOINC to run, it does not lock up (at least I have not seen it yet); but when I have BOINC running it locks up most of the time. I am currently trying to purge through all my tasks by running with GPU on while in use (the computer never seems to fail in use) and "no new tasks" and then will try replacing all my SETI apps. I don't really know when this started occurring, but it definitely seems to be tied to the GPU. I can't rule out that it was related to my Win 8.1 upgrade or to some other component replacements I did, but everything else on the machine seems to run fine.

Hello All; I am having a somewhat similar problem. Ever since my machine did the update to BOINC v. 7.2.42, when my screen saver starts, instead of just showing the Running Process Graphic like it always has on all my machines for the last 15 years, it will show the Graphic for about a second then it will switch to a screen with a black background and the large BOINC logo with my taskbar at the bottom. Then, in about another second, it will show the running process graphic again for about a half-second with my taskbar at the bottom. Then, sometimes, it will show a screen that says something to the effect of "This computer is running BOINC/SETI" with 2 bar graphs showing the progress for each SETI task and the time remaining for each. Then, it just keeps switching between all of these anomalies every 1/2 - 1 second until my screen goes blank (because I have it set to do so after 15 minutes). At first, I was worried that it wasn't processing the tasks. But everything else is working as it should. It's just what it's showing on my screen when my screen saver kicks in after the 3 minutes that I have it set to that is driving me up the wall!!
ANY help will, as always, be GREATLY appreciated. I am......
Sincerely,
JC

JC,

Did you look at what the preferences you have for your screensaver? Anywhere on the screen, right click.. it should have a pop up then click on personalize. To the far left should say screensaver (mine says none but I know seti is there) click on that. You should now have the screensaver settings panel. middle of page says BOINC next to it settings. click on that. Look at all the values, especially the last one where it says switch between screensavers every.. ( I put my at 5 minutes just so all the different settings don't conflict with each other) If you already tried this, then Sorry for making you read all of this. What are your settings?

(mine says none but I know seti is there)

No, Seti won't be there as Seti is just a program running under BOINC. No one installs Seti, so Seti cannot add a *.scr file into the Windows directory: no permission to do so.
However, BOINC is the program one installs, so the screen saver that one has to enable here is BOINC.

But even then, fiddling with the screen saver preferences will not fix the fast switching between BOINC screen saver, background and Seti graphics program. This is a problem with the BOINC screen saver, one that crept in between 7.2.34 and 7.2.42, and can only be fixed by either going back to 7.2.33, going forward to development version 7.4.8, or disabling the screen saver.

Windows 7.2.33
- boinc_7.2.33_windows_intelx86.exe
- boinc_7.2.33_windows_x86_64.exe

Windows 7.4.8
- boinc_7.4.8_windows_intelx86.exe
- boinc_7.4.8_windows_x86_64.exe

Zalster,
Thanks for the reply. I did already try this & thats not what the issue is. "Ageless" actually replied to your reply to me &, if you read it, you'll see what I had suspected all along. That there is an issue that arose between versions 7.2.33 & 7.2.42. I was going to try going back to v. 7.2.32 but decided to post my issue on here first just in case someone may have heard of this problem. And, lo and behold, I saw Ageless' post. He suggests rolling back to v. 7.2.32 OR going forward to development v. 7.4.8 OR disabling the screen saver. So, Montie, I think I will take whats behind curtain #2 & try 7.4.8.. Once again, thank you for the reply, Zalster.

Ageless,
If you'll read my reply to Zalster, you will see that I had suspected that this was the case (the issue with the BOINC screen saver that arose between v. 7.2.34 & 7.2.42). So, I will go ahead with 7.4.8 &, if you'd like, I'll let you know if it fixes the issue. Thanks for taking the time to put your 2 cents in!

Ageless,
Just as you (and I) had suspected, installing a different version of BOINC fixed the problem. I went ahead with 7.4.8 and, even though it's a development version, it completely fixed the "bug" and I have had no further issues. Just thought I'd let you know. And, for the benefit of anyone else who may be having this same issue, changing installed version of BOINC works just as Ageless had suggested.
Many thanks, Ageless! I am....

Sincerely,
JC

As an update to this thread, I am in the process of building a new system. XFX Radeon7750, FX8350, Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0, etc.

I setup the machine, allowed the Catalyst driver to update it self to the Beta version. Things ran perfect, overclocked, undervolted to keep it cool and Seti@home kept crunching away!

The problems started when I tried installing Windows 10 on a dual boot partition. For whatever reason it seems Microsoft is still having some minor glitches when using a hard drive over 2TB. In a nutshell, I wound up reloading this machine from an image I created before updating the Catalyst driver so it was using the version that came on the install disc.

As soon as BOINC would begin using the GPU the HDMI would 'pop' out. The machine functioned in the background but no screen. I could reboot from the keyboard and hear sounds etc but no video. After updating to the latest (non beta) Catalyst I was able to get the video to stay but the HDMI would still reset but the video would come back a second later. After doing a fresh install of Windows 7 which didn't help since I just tried the Catalyst from the install disc as well as the latest drivers and got the same results.

I was ready to purchase a newer video card when I tried the Beta drivers after reading about AMD's numerous driver issues. Things cleared up instantly with the install of the current Beta version of Catalyst 14.301.1004-141004a-176493E.

In a nutshell, these driver issues are still plaguing AMD even with some slightly newer hardware.
