That maybe it HAL, but I'm not so sure that it was.

I don't know. It was the only comment of yours I could find, but I was only searching in Number Crunching. Perhaps there was also a thread in Cafe?

Message 1705801 - Posted: 28 Jul 2015, 0:09:34 UTC

15 yrs, (16yrs since my first account) does seem kinda strange. Back then it was more a case of stress testing my water cooled computer (even the heat sinks were hand made in those days) and finding a use for my Pentium Pro system,(or was it systems,) and of course having the coolest screen saver!

Did I really hope to find ET? I'm not so sure, I would have to look at some of my posts from those days. I don't think so, as my credits show (even with all accounts combined) my support has been tepid at best.

Yet I'm still a little disappointed that more than a decade and a half of using collectively millions of computers hasn't contributed more. The task seems to overwhelm the effort.

I also suspect that people's willingness to donate computer time and electricity is not as effective as money. Like giving food to a food bank it makes the giver feel good but money is what the food bank, SETI, and other group efforts really need. They can always buy what is needed and without the overhead that comes with donations of goods and services.

Which has me asking if I would have donated money for the cause?

I spent money so would I have given that money if it was as easy to do? I find the answer to be not so much. I ran SETI for the pretty screensaver, to stress systems, and sometimes to rack up CPU hours and credits. If given the chance to give money without the cookies (fun) I would not have donated as much. It kinda feels like giving food to the food bank, like I should do more.

I think if I want to say I support SETI and other such project I need to donate money. OK, now I've got to go get some money, I guess a contract or job would help with that so maybe I'll start there, lol.

Here's to another 15yrs and hopefully an increase in what I feel is real support.

You and me both, november is just around the corner.

Just got back after a long hiatus at folding@home and the whole bitcoin/litecoin thing.

Good to have my screen saver back. ;)

I was getting ready to move in May 2014, so was inactive then. I'm happy to be crunching data again.

I've upgraded my main computer a little bit since 1999, but this CPU is from 2009, so it's not TOO old yet as long as I put a new GPU in once in a while.

I'd love to see if I can compile a usable client for my Playstation 2 - it has the Linux kit, but (sadly) only 16M of RAM. The "emotion engine" was quite a chip in it's day - when 2 Million polygons per second rendering was a good rate.

15 years for me today, woo hoo! I'm afraid to know how much money I've "invested" in this project, between all of the computer builds and electrical bills :-P

For those of you who recently posted in this thread but who actually joined 16 years ago (in 1999) there is a "Welcome to the 16 Year Club" thread.

apparently, it has been 15 years for me too. On, and off, I have to say. I don't think I was looking for ET for at least a few years during this period.

Here's to another few more years before we'll have to bow down to our alien overlords and work as slave labor.
