Message 1602343 - Posted: 19 Nov 2014, 2:00:12 UTC - in response to Message 1602330.

I think they were issued to new housewives in the late 50's.

Look at what they had at the time. My mom has a cast iron chicken cooker that's around 100 years old. Very functional but not exactly pretty. They may have had clay pots they could use but I suspect most of them were pretty plain. By the 50's and 60's people had a bit more money and wanted something that looked good on the table and when combined with the newer glass products that could take oven heat without danger of cracking, everybody had to have it. Corning knew they had a winner on their hands and they were right.

The funny thing is they are now making cast iron with a bright porcelain finish. If I didn't already have a couple of cast iron pans, I would get one.

I have a cast aluminum pan w/lid, good enough to cook either a large chicken or a small turkey, it was made in Australia...

Good to know Monday.
I have a roemertopf. Yes I lugged it across the pond.

We also have Römertopf:)

The easy way to cook food.
Natural cooking in clay
Cooking in it´s own juice
Additional fat or liquids are hardly necessary, oil ...
Vitamins and minerals are retained, as much as possible
Nothing can burn, the oven stays clean
The natural flavors of the dish are intensified
All dishes are prepared as if they cooked themselves

Here's a recipe for XMAS...

Grinch Kabobs! - Light holiday snack - it'll make your heart grow 3 sizes... but not your belly...

Skewer Grapes, Sliced Bananas, Strawberries, and a Small Marshmallow - dust with powdered sugar to make them "snowy". Great for that last minute holiday party you forgot about until now.

...Made me think, what about slipping the odd one made with chillies instead of the grape and strawberry into the bowl. I can just picture Great Aunt Maude's face as she tucks into her 43 "Sweet little Santa" fruit on a stick, and finds this one is not as sweet as she expected. Or is that just the naughty school boy in me escaping again?

Good prank. Could use olives, too.

Olives? Nah, part of a Jalapeno, for some kick, like a mule... :D

Fruit and peppers are perfect together:)
Boil some greenpeppars in cream.
Sprincle that on the strawberries.
I haven't tried jalapeno but its seems like a very good idea.

Jalapenos are very HOT... Try a small piece at first, it took time, but My Nephew eventually acquired a taste for them...

Actually Vic, jalapeno peppers are pretty low down on the Scoville Scale, relatively speaking.

Scoville Scale

The heat in any chili pepper lies primarily in the seeds and pepper ribs. If you enjoy the flavor of a particular type of chili but want to go easy on the heat, just remove some or all of the seeds or ribs.

I prefer Bird`s eye.
I use it for my Goulash soup.

They are hot still, scale or no scale.
