Message 1573083 - Posted: 17 Sep 2014, 5:16:32 UTC - in response to Message 1573082.

I understand the brain's release of good feeling chemicals reinforcing our sugar intake, but why do some of us crave salty/savory stuff so much? I remember as a kid I used to eat table salt by itself. :~0>

One possible reason is your kidneys are passing more salt than they should. When I was a teen working all day in the arizona sun, I lost so much salt through sweat that at dinner time, the salt was the best tasting thing on the table. If you still have the craving, you might want to mention it to your doctor. There are medications to control the condition. My grandmothers blood pressure was so low, they told her to eat more salt and take a medication that caused her to retain the salt.

Interesting thought, thanks. I know my mom has always had a can of iodizxed salt in the cupboard. I can't remember why iodine is so important to us, but it's funny it's added to salt.

Iodine is for goiter. We get much more sea food in our diet today so goiter isn't the problem it once was but they still put iodine in salt just in case.

Goiter! That's it. I knew it was a relic from the past like that. ;~}

I forgot to weigh myself after the gym this morning.

Probably for the best.

My scale's batteries are not flat, though the ones for My flashlight are nearly flat, led bulb and all, I've got 2 D cells to replace.

I want ice cream. Instead I am eating green grapes. The grapes are good. The grapes are sweet. I am enjoying the grapes... but I still want ice cream.

Good work Angela, hang in there. :-)

It's lunch time Saturday here and I'm going to the bakery for a loaf of Hi fiber low GI white bread. On the way back I will get a sausage on bread with onions from the charity sausage sizzle. For dinner tonight I will get a box of sushi.

I have made many batches of this and it may not be as good as high test ice cream, it's a good replacement. I figure you get about 6 servings out of a batch.

INGREDIENTS
3 eggs
1/2 cup Splenda
1 teaspoon salt
3 cups of 2% fat milk
1 cup cream
1 table spoon real vanilla extract (Get a large bottle at Sam’s Club, Costco or Smart and Final)

Break the 3 eggs into a pan, use the whisk to mix the eggs well. While whisking the eggs, add the salt, splenda and last add the milk. Place the pan over the double boiler and heat to 170 degrees. DON’T stop whisking or you will end up with scrambled eggs instead of a creamy mixture. When you reach 170 degrees, remove from the heat and allow it to cool to below 130 degrees. Now add the cream and vanilla. Place the mixture in the refrigerator for 8 to 24 hours so it cools to below 40 degrees. Place the mixture in an ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufactures instructions. I use a frozen bowl unit and it takes about 30 minutes for soft serve. I place the results in the freezer for at least 1 hour before serving but if you like it soft, you can skip this step.
I also find it takes 20 to 30 minutes of counter time to soften stored ice cream before serving.

VARIATIONS
You can work with vanilla beans (they are far more costly) or add more or less Splenda to taste.
If you like chocolate Chip (my favorite), add 3 oz of shaved or chopped semi-sweet chocolate 5 minutes before the the ice cream is done in the freezer.
You can also replace the vanilla with 2 table spoons of Dark rum for a rum flavored ice cream.

Note: Any food with Custard in the name means it contains cooked eggs and cream creating a creamy substance that will coat a metal surface. Some ice cream is made without cooking the eggs or without eggs at all. These are not Custards but may be ice cream or ice milk..

I love this thread, but it is getting a bit long. Now that Eric is aware of Angela's efforts, maybe it it time to declare a winner and start part two.

Are you sure Eric knows? As a man I tend not to notice things, I'm only aware of things when a woman tells me :) Has Angela told Eric of her duplicitous dieting? :)

Eric knows there is a dieting thread but he does not know that I occasionally pass up ice cream, since I obviously don't pass up ice cream often enough to make a difference.
