Eric has about 7 episodes of Game of Thrones taped and he and my sister are binge watching them at our house today. Every time I go into the living room, somebody is lopping somebody else's head off. What do they see in this horrible show???!!!

I brought some snacks into the living room, only to hear somebody on the television tell a child to open his eyes so that they could be eaten. I cleared some plates away and another character was er... uh... tinkling on the ground. Good grief! How does any of this pass for entertainment? Eric and my sister Andrea are on episode 4 of 7. I have been keeping busy doing other things, but in the background I sure do hear a whole lot of swords clanging.

I absolutely love Game of Thrones, Angela, but if you don't then you have to get through it the best way possible by playing the HBO drinking game. Every time there are boobies on the screen you take a shot. You'll be drunk in no time and you won't care about the rest.

Are you trying to give Angela acute alcohol poisoning?

I prefer Grappa Nonino. It is a grappa from Friuli manufactured by a blonde lady and her beautiful daughters.

Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama television series. Filmed in a Belfast studio and on location elsewhere in Northern Ireland, Malta, Scotland, Croatia, Iceland and Morocco. It has attracted record numbers of viewers on HBO and obtained an exceptionally broad and active international fan base. It received widespread acclaim by critics, although its frequent use of nudity, violence and sexual violence has attracted criticism.

Hmmmmmm

Hmmmmmm indeed. HBO free preview weekend on Uverse in two weeks.

Limoncello is an Italian lemon liqueur mainly produced in Southern Italy, especially in the region around the Gulf of Naples, the Sorrentine Peninsula and the coast of Amalfi and islands of Procida, Ischia and Capri. Even though there is debate about the exact origin of the drink, it is at least one hundred years old. Traditionally, it is made from the zest of Femminello St. Teresa lemons, also known as Sorrento lemons or Sfusato Lemons.

The United States has seen a rise in commercial producers using California lemons which are grown year around, with 90% of the United States lemon crops coming from California.

The special thing about Angela's Limoncello is that it is made with her own lemons from her own tree/bush in her own back yard.

You forgot that vital ingredient, "passion". Which Angela so obviously infused into the bottle in a very large helping :-)

These are some lemons from that same tree that were safely delivered to me by Uli just over a week ago.

I think I've commented on your Provence style table cloth before, but I still like the colours very much.

This is Angela's lemon tree in her back yard, taken by me in Autumn 2011.

My Mom and I had a house with a lemon tree in behind the house like that back in 1987, down in San Gabriel CA, doubt the lemon tree is there anymore though.

It is only a relatively small tree/bush but the size of the lemons are amazing, over twice the size of those we can buy here in the shops. The large one in the LH of the picture is 4-1/2" long x 3" diameter. It'll almost be a shame to cut it!

This pic below is of a lemon tree in Santa Clara CA, so even the bigger ones are not that tall.

Imagine how much better those lemons would be if the grass was removed from under the canopy. ;-)

Cheers.

Looks like these are dwarf varieties - trees grown of rootstock bred to be short and compact. I have 5 dwarf citrus in my back yard - Valencia orange, Navel Orange, Grapefruit, and Lemon in a planter my Dad built 50 years ago when we bought the house, and another dwarf grapefruit in a half-barrel that we planted in 2004. That one was supposed to be a red grapefruit, but the red grapefruit graft died, and the white grapefruit rootstock developed instead.

The older trees are about 12 feet high and the crowns are about 8-10 feet in diameter. When I worked summers in the commercial citrus groves, mature trees were topped at 25 feet tall, but the crowns were up to 30 feet in diameter. Some you could walk under, and even set up camp under (as we saw from time to time).

The size of the fruit can be affected by the amount and regularity of watering. In wet years, I've had lemons the size Chris describes. This year, with the water restrictions, I'm only watering my trees once every 3 weeks for about 2 hours. That seems to be enough to minimize stress, but the fruit on all the trees is smaller than usual.

The tree we put in is supposed to be a dwarf modified Meyer. Meyer lemons are typically thin skinned and small, but our lemons tend to be very large. Winter fruits have thinner layers of pith, but in the summer the pith layer is thick. We are careful to cut out any suckers that might come from below the graft line, so I am pretty sure that we are not eating root stock lemons. Water may be a factor in size, but I suspect cross pollination is a bigger factor for us. Most of our neighbors have citrus trees of one kind or another and I suspect the bees pollinate our lemons with other varieties of trees, so we get some strange sort of mix. Tasty though - the lemons are good for baking, they are good on fish, they make good lemonade and they make good Limoncello.

I am jealous of your valley heat! Up here we do not get enough heat to produce tasty oranges and grapefruits. People who grow these fruits in our area grow them largely for ornamental purposes. The fruits of oranges and grapefruits up here are invariably too tart to enjoy. In our area we do bests with lemons, limes and kumquats.
