You got it down Mark.

Watch out, Ma Bell will be lookin for ya.

Aw heck, I have not let a technician on the premises for years.
If there is trouble, I just check it out on my end, and tell the guy......
Look, you get me a good clean line to MY block, and I'll take it from there.

I had only one bad attitude tech many years ago.
Noise on the line. He tested at the demarcation block on the outside of my home.
Noisy. He said...I'll have to get inside and test your equipment. I said, not my equipment fix yours first.
He snarled at me as if I didn't know s**t from shinola.
I took the line going from the block into my basement and ripped it off the block. Said...OK, buddy, test it now.
He did, and it was noisy as all hell. He looked at me with his eyes narrowed to slits and said smartass.....now what are you gonna do, wiseguy??

It got traced to a junction box blocks away that had water dripping into it.
He came by later in the afternoon to retest and apologize.
I gave him a thumbs up and he gave me a smile and handshake.
And then I pulled out my punchdown tool and put my line back on the block....LOL.
He was all grins at that point.

It's amazing how much time and work a knowledgeable person can save a telco repair man, if you can convince them to let you. I am an IT person and have been involved with telco for years but, some will just not listen.

Most of them will come around. The rest must need the practice.

Well, I can understand their reluctance to believe that the 'man on the street' knows much. I have myself dealt with many folks that think they know a lot, but don't. And they will spend hours of your time trying to convince you that they know something.

But, it does get frustrating when one DOES know what they are talking about to get a professional to take the time to listen. I do sympathize.
Tradesmen have a tough time once in a while determining who knows, as I said, s**t from shinola. And can spend hours on a bum steer otherwize.

I got a PM that I believe means it is my turn. I am confirming this at the moment.

I have a picture in mind, but will have to find it among the pictures I took on vacation.

OK, I got confirmation that it is my turn. (it would have been nice if that was posted in this thread as well).

Here is a photo I got from the web.

What is it?

Presumably you wind the handle and the metal block travels along the bottom guide rod?

I have never actually seen it in use.

No.

[edit]

Look closely at your pencils. They are formed from 2 pieces of wood glued together around the graphite rod.
