meat is too cheap now...enjoy it, while it is! soon, we have to pay for our mistakes..."meat production for every day meal" is one of that!
;)

Cheap meat? Not here it is.
And vegetables are very expensive here.
Meat are actually cheaper then meat here if you exclude read meat.
Unless your diet would consist of only potatoes, beans and swedes:)
And porridge of course that was almost the only thing people lived on until the 20th century here in Scandinavia.

A way to produce hydrogen using formic acid from University of Melbourne. It does have a downside in that it also produces carbon dioxide, but they are working on that. New Molecular Design to Get Hydrogen-Powered Cars Motoring

meat production is too expensive to keep it on this level:

vegetable are cheaper per water & square km array:

so, we have to change our culture soon!

But you do have to take into consideration that there are "farm lands" that are no good at all to grow crops on, but by using large areas can be used for raising animals. Only about 36% of agricultural land in the UK is suitable for crops.

In Southern Illinois where rainfall is plentiful and the ground not too suitable for heavy yield crop production I could put one cow/calf combination per acre (roughly .4 Hectares for you commies) in my 120 acres of pasture. Corn production in the 50 acres that we planted was always less than 100 bushels per acre.

Out in the west where the hated Bureau of Land Management rents out Government land for grazing it can take 100 acres per cow/calf.

Just a few hundred miles north in Illinois from my farm in the Champaign county area (where I lived and worked for the University of Illinois) in a very good year 300 bushel corn and 65 bushels of soy beans per acre was not unheard of. Just a mile or so from where I lived there was a grain elevator that had an enormous pile of corn on the ground covered with tarps held down by old car tires. There weren't enough rail cars to ship in to ports and other points of processing. It rained a half inch every other day that year--I got 300 pounds of really delicious tomatoes that year from just 6 plants in my garden--about 50 square feet of land. I gave most of them to a worker house for the poor to be made into spaghetti sauce.

In the United States we have plenty of land for grazing, farming and fruit orchards.

Feeding animals is an inefficient way to produce protein. The US could feed the entire world if people would eat things like soy beans instead of Meat. I think I saw an estimate that this would be 45 times more efficient in producing protein for human consumption as opposed to feeding the grain to beef cattle.

We are so blessed with abundance that we can do really stupid things like diverting a sizable portion of our corn production to make ethanol to mix in to our motor fuel. This is a sop to farmers but has probably doubled the price of meat since demand for corn has vastly increased.

Another good instructional rant by Daddio.

Yes. But say that to the eldery here in Sweden living on small pensions.
They cannot afford to buy vegetables and fruit and chose to eat meat and potatoes instead.
Many single mothers with children does the same.
Many are suffering from malnutrition because of this.
The only solution is to raise pensions and lower the price of vegetables.
Will never happen!

Hmm...

A lot of people are knocking meat production...

What about rice?

25% to 30% of ALL fresh water used on the planet is used to grow rice...

Rice production accounts for maybe 20% of all anthropogenic emission sources of the GHG Methane (CH4).

Food for thought.... <grin>

Speaking of food culture.
When do we will stop waste food?
Roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year — approximately 1.3 billion tonnes — gets lost or wasted.

http://www.fao.org/save-food/resources/keyfindings/en/
1.3 billion tonnes of food requires a LOT of water, land and energy.
No matter what type of food it is.
It also produces a LOT of CO2 and CH4.
Not to mention other side effects.

One side effect is what happening close to me in the Baltic Sea.
The sea is dying because of all fertilizers pouring in to it.
Meaning that fish production is going down!

Recycled coffee grounds, cnn - Caffeine fix: Wake up to recycled coffee

Yes. But why only coffe grounds?
In Sweden, households throw away 4.2 million tonnes of household waste including food waste in a year.
This corresponds to about 160 kg food waste per year per person.
Approximately 30 percent of all food that is thrown away could have been eaten instead of becoming waste.
Also approximately 60 percent of all plastic packaging are thrown in the bin.

You need infrastructure and economical incentive to handle the recycling into biogas though.
Here where I live the infrastructure has already been done only a couple of months ago.
Quite messy really but you maybe learn how to handle it over time.
Yesterday we had a fly invasion that most likely came from the food waste:(

Turmoil in South Australia's heavily wind-reliant electricity market has forced the state government to plead with the owner of a mothballed gas-fired power station to turn it back on.

The emergency measures are needed to ease punishing costs for South Australian industry as National Electricity Market (NEM) prices in the state have frequently surged above $1000 a megawatt hour this month and at one point on Tuesday hit the $14,000MWh maximum price.

Complaints from business about the extreme prices – in normal times they are below $100 – prompted the state government to ask energy company ENGIE to switch its mothballed Pelican Point gas power station back on.

The extraordinary intervention – first foreshadowed in December when the government of premier Jay Weatherill hosted an energy crisis meeting – comes as electricity prices soar to near record levels across the nation.

...

Cold weather and the closure of South Australia's Northern and Playford coal-fired power stations as wind provides an increasing share of the state's power have combined to send NEM prices to their highest average levels since the 2007 drought.

But South Australia, which led the charge into wind and solar energy and gets two-fifths of its power from these sources, has suffered the highest prices on the mainland, increasing the pressure on the state's industrial energy users.

...

South Australian energy minister and treasurer Tom Koutsantonis said he had taken the "extraordinary step" of asking ENGIE to switch on its mothballed Pelican Point gas-fired power station at the request of an alarmed industry sector.

"A planned outage of the Heywood Interconnector to Victoria, coupled with higher than expected gas prices and severe weather conditions have contributed to large-scale price volatility in the energy spot market in recent days," Mr Koutsantonis said.

"The failure in the energy market has led the Government to ask ENGIE, the owner of Pelican Point Power Station, to run the plant for a short period, providing 239MW of additional supply into the energy market.

"It is believed the increased base-load supply from the previously mothballed plant will lead to improved system security."

The station was switched on on Thursday afternoon and was set to generate as much as 150 MW later that night and be capable of operating at full capacity of 247Mw after that depending on demand.

Energy experts say South Australia's heavy reliance on wind energy is compounding its problems in two ways, first by forcing the remaining baseload generators to earn more revenue in shorter periods of time when the wind isn't blowing, and secondly by forcing baseload coal and gas generators out of the market altogether.

http://www.afr.com/business/energy/south-australia-intervenes-in-electricity-market-as-prices-hit-14000mwh-20160714-gq5sac

o_O

$14,000.00 per MegaWatt-hour?!?!? Whisky... Tango... Foxtrot...

I *have* said that wind & solar can't handle the 'baseload' on an electric grid, and here is the proof.

If you want to transition off of fossil fuel use for electric power generation, you *MUST* use nuclear to handle the baseload.

But, after T.M.I., Chernobyl, and Fukushima... It would be polite to say that nuclear has extremely fallen out of favor.

I *thought* that the game plan was to provide cheap, non-fossil-fuel, electricity and then tax the h311 out of fossil-fuels to... convince everyone to go that route...

But $14000/MWh??? I can easily use that much electricity in a month... It is, after all, only 1000 KWh...

I guess that Australia has... other ideas... on how to go about it. I realize that it is only the AU $ 'funny money'... but DAYUM...

Turn off the AC, and office buildings would become uninhabitable, vehicles sitting in traffic would become torture chambers, apartment buildings would become death traps.

That is an odd request considering the consequences.

Or are we to dismantle civilization.

The focus needs to be on China. They release more greenhouse effects than the rest of the world combined. We trash our economies in complying while China rages on spewing crap and getting fatter laughing all the way to the bank.

List of countries by carbon dioxide emissions per capita
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_carbon_dioxide_emissions_per_capita

Remember Mark Twain?
The ranking makes no sense.
For instance no 17 on the list of bad countries is the Faroe Islands!
First of all it's not a country. It's an autonom region of Denmark.
About 50,000 lives there.
Should they feel bad for a high carbon dioxide emissions per capita?

Heck. I would like to see a rankning list high carbon dioxide emissions per person/country/income!
