Slowly, we're seeing how to use what were previously considered as waste gasses that went up the chimney to pollute: UK's first 'poo bus' goes into service between Bristol and Bath The UK's first bus powered entirely by human and food waste has gone into service between Bristol and Bath. The 40-seat "Bio-Bus" runs on biomethane gas generated through the treatment of sewage and food waste. The eco-friendly vehicle can travel up to 300km (186 miles) on one tank of gas, which takes the annual waste of about five people to produce... ... Bristol sewage treatment works processes around 75 million cubic metres of sewage waste and 35,000 tonnes of food waste each year. A total of 17 million cubic metres of biomethane, enough to power 8,300 homes, is generated annually at the plant... Bilsthorpe power station plans approved Plans for a £70m power station on the site of a former colliery in Nottinghamshire have been approved. The plant, to be built on the Bilsthorpe Colliery site, would use waste to generate electricity. ... However, Mark Spencer, MP for Sherwood, said he has written to the Communities Secretary to review the decision. ... "A lot of people are concerned about this new technology," he said... ... the site would handle around 120,000 tonnes of non-hazardous waste each year and create enough power to meet the needs of about 23,000 homes. However, a campaign group has claimed the plant is just another incinerator... Smelly stuff or the good and green way to go? However, a campaign group has claimed the plant is just another incinerator... OMG someone spoke the truth. All that waste would have been buried trapping the carbon, now it is going to escape. |

http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/enso/tracker/ El Nino tracker is now at the alert level 70% change of El Nino forming this summer(southern hemiphere) And to the silly people that think because north America is in the grip of cold temps that that proves we don't have to worry about GW. The ice cores show after CO2 gets above a certain level the earth goes into a ICE AGE and it can happen in only 50 years . Are we now seeing this unfold before our eyes ?? |

Can all the deniers please explain how a woolly mamoth could snap freeze ? And do any of you understand what this means when talking about GW or why it is a real threat here's a clue 45 c one week and then -50 the next now i wonder what circumstances could make that happen It could not happen as the climate changes from being to warm (high CO2) to lower temps (low CO2) just before a ice age could it ? na glen your high school education could not give you the brains to work that one out so shut up glen |

Bilsthorpe power station plans approved If the chimneys are fitted with catalytic scrubbers that will mitigate some of the problem. There's a campaign group against everything these days, often ill-informed luddites who want something to shout about. In a few months they'll get bored and move on to something else. Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |

Such a plant should be kept at negative pressure to avoid odors. Also they will find that in certain times of the year they will have to add significant amounts of gas to drive off the moisture from wet garbage and lawn waste. If there is any positive revenue it will come from tipping fees. Other operators have found that trash haulers will drive many miles to a cheaper landfill to avoid high tipping fees so they are often left with little fuel for the boilers. In a government run operation this may not be a problem. Financial viability is also enhanced if there is a steam district serving downtown businesses for heat, hot water and steam absorption air conditioning for the waste heat to be gainfully employed. Big Players in incineration equipment are Von Roll and Wheelabrator Frye. |

Other operators have found that trash haulers will drive many miles to a cheaper landfill to avoid high tipping fees so they are often left with little fuel for the boilers. In a government run operation this may not be a problem. As always seems to be the case, it is likely a game of what the operators can "get away with" to minimize their costs and the environment and everyone around be damned. For that site, at least it is reasonably remote and cleans up and makes green what was previously a polluted colliery. We are getting ever more restricted for new "landfill" sites to dump refuse and so burning it in whatever way is now the favored alternative. At least for this scheme, it can only be better than exporting the rubbish over to Holland to be burnt there! And some power is generated by the power plant attached to the incinerator. Which then comes to as ever, ensuring there is no fallout... At least there is a slow move with examples such as that towards "doing things better"... However, we still have a long way to go yet to put a price on the costs to everyone else for the cost and disruption of pollution. We are getting ever more restricted for new "landfill" sites to dump refuse and so burning it in whatever way is now the favored alternative. So the favored alternative is the release the carbon in the trash in the form of CO2 into the atmosphere. And ML1 is promoting this as a solution to the emission of GHG's. |

We are getting ever more restricted for new "landfill" sites to dump refuse and so burning it in whatever way is now the favored alternative. Sheeesh... Can you can never read the words whilst blinded by your inane desperation to troll anything and anyone? Are you really so old and grumpy that you can no longer discuss anything? Troll vitriol all the way to your grave is it?... Now try reading the words... I said nothing there about what I might favor... My preferred way would be to not produce the refuse in the first place... And yes, that can be done and is workable. All that is needed is for all products to be designed to be recycled... As for the incineration: The numbers might add up to that being better than losing refuse methane that would then heat up our atmosphere yet faster. And for one bright example where going solar becomes art?... 'Solar tree' to replace real tree in Bristol city centre A 4m (13ft) tall "solar tree" is set to be installed in the centre of Bristol. The steel tree, covered in 36 solar panel "leaves", will replace a real tree due to be removed due to old age in Millennium Square. Embedded with solar-powered phone charging points, the "wind blown" sculpture will also offer free wi-fi. Dan Quiggin, from Demand Energy Equality which came up with the idea, said the "large spectacular object" was to increase awareness of energy issues... Slightly ironic to replace natural carbon capture with a man-made structure. But hey! At least the art form thought is in there... :-) All on our only one planet, Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

There is a good way we can go: UK using less energy despite growing economy... People in the UK are using less energy even though the economy is growing, new figures confirm. Increased wealth typically leads to increased energy use - but this link appears to have been broken by technology and government policy... Do not let The Dirty Fossils burn us all out! Another small but positive step and hopefully more than window dressing for a New Year's Resolution: New EU energy rules for TVs and other household gadgets ... Many gadgets are connected to the internet 24/7, using 25-100 watts while their owners sleep. But new devices sold from Thursday will fall to sleep, using a trickle of power when they are not in use. The European Commission said the move would save an average household about £32 a year. The change is part of the EU's Ecodesign initiative, which aims to cut costs, improve competitiveness and reduce carbon emissions. Energy labels on online products will also be improved, while gas ovens will have to display energy ratings. The Commission said the best gas oven would typically save £143 over its lifetime compared with the worst. Critics argue that such regulations - which recently included banning the sale of popular high-wattage vacuum cleaners - are denying consumer choice. Energy experts have told the BBC that manufacturers deliberately increased the wattage of some vacuums to make them appear more attractive to consumers - even though the machines produced more heat and noise, rather than more suction... Such is the wasteful abuse from sloppy shoddy lazy (cheap) design and Marketing the-planet-be-damned... Hopefully the "is" will soon become "was"... How do we promote and enforce more widespread greater responsibility for design for energy efficiency?...
