Isn't that figure a bit questionable, not that wind was the greater for that period, but that several nuclear stations are off at the moment. For example, at the moment (06:00 GMT, 02/11/2014), the UK is supplied by primarily: 1. CC-Gas 23% 2. Coal 24% 3. Wind 19% (4.3 Giga Watts) 4. Nuclear 20%

One non-tech solution that is becoming ever more significant: ... Apparently The Fossil Fuel Lobby... What started as a trickle has grown into a stream, and by most accounts, is likely to turn into a flood. We are, of course, talking about fossil fuel divestments as an increasing number of investors and fund managers are pledging to cleanse their portfolios of dirty assets – whatever that means... This looks like a good idea better balance exploiting the natural environment: Wind farm shares to be sold to locals under new scheme Locals could be offered the chance to buy shares in new wind farms, solar farms and hydro power stations, under new government approved guidelines... ... The scheme aims to reduce local opposition to renewable energy development. It has been developed by the renewable industry alongside community groups. The Shared Ownership Taskforce plan follows similar programmes in Denmark which have been running for more than two decades. It applies to anything entering the planning system from Monday... That less financially greedy approach may well be a better balance for all to gain "buy-in" and help save our planet even if only by gaining a more widespread appreciation of what it takes to industrially live on our only one planet... The latest round of world politics rolls onwards as the Fossils Fuels industry continue to lobby and to burn us out: UN: Fossil fuels should be TERMINATED 86 years from now The latest UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report alarmingly warned today that it was vital for the world to phase out fossil fuels by 2100. The committee claimed that cutting greenhouse gas emissions by between 40 per cent and 70 per cent by 2050, and to near or below zero emissions in 2100 "would likely keep warming <2°C." Its chair Rajendra Pachauri warned during a press conference in Copenhagen, Denmark on Sunday morning, according to official tweets from the IPCC, that "climate change will leave no part of the world untouched." He added that the "costs of inaction" were "much higher than the costs of action. Inaction would create increasing risks to economic growth."... Strictly come warming: Swing time at the UN ... In the end, the published report was quite a chunky document - growing by a whopping 25% in just seven days of discussions. "More words, less meaning," said one of those involved. While the main elements of cause, impact and solution remain unchanged from the underlying reports published over the last year, some of the inclusions and exclusions reflect the rise of the political process. Countries are jockeying for position ahead of negotiations on a new global climate treaty in Paris next year. Some are better in the saddle than others. A strange, old school alliance between Saudi Arabia and Bolivia delivered significant changes in some parts of the document. ... under pressure from the curious Latin American-Saudi coalition, the finished document speaks of 1.5, 2 and even 3 degrees in some detail. Even more bizarre is a completely new paragraph that begins: "Mitigation policies could devalue fossil fuel assets and reduce revenues for fossil fuel exporters..." Then there's the ubiquitous references to carbon, capture and storage (CCS) as being a critical technology if the world wants to keep using fossil fuels. The current pace of development of CCS in the world has been glacial... ... By having the references to losses expected for fossil fuel producers enshrined in the text, by putting huge emphasis on CCS, the Saudis and others will be able to say at crucial moments that the science backs their position. And, in a very real sense, it is true. What was going on behind the scenes in Copenhagen is a reflection of the key difficulty facing those who want to secure a new global climate treaty - what is the ultimate priority for nations?, cutting emissions of carbon or lifting people out of poverty by whatever means necessary?... Even the denialist biased (controversy stirring, sponsored?) The Register appears to now give muted acceptance that we are unnaturally warming our only planet. However, are the politics and industrial lobbying going to lumber on "by whatever means necessary" to damn our planet for all?... We can go profitably low-carbon. For everyone's benefit, why not do that sooner rather than later? I calculated yesterday that between 1st March and 31st October this year, my little solar plant saved me £62.67 in electricity. If i didn't live in the midlands, i'd be looking for a small wind turbine to mount to the chimney as well. Maybe i should move to a house by a stream, so i could drop in a water wheel... The point is; in four generations time, if the will is there, we oughtn't need fossil fuels. Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |

Ah, green isn't green ... or an energy company is an energy company be it fossil of "green" http://www.latimes.com/science/la-me-solar-silurian-20141109-story.html#page=1 Will renewable energy ruin an 'irreplaceable' Mojave desert oasis? |

...The federal Bureau of Land Management describes the Silurian Valley as an "undisturbed, irreplaceable, historic scenic landscape." All indeed good and important to consider as for anything that is going to have an impact on our environment. So in contrast... How did the vast open cast destruction working through "oil sand deposits lie under 141,000 square kilometres (54,000 sq mi) of boreal forest and muskeg" be allowed to get underway? With the implication that almost ALL that area is to be 'developed'... 141,000 square kilometres? And then there are the big open cast mines in America and Australia where large areas and all wildlife are simply destroyed. And the combustion results in poisoning our atmosphere and oceans... There must be a better solution. All on our only one planet, Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

There must be a better solution. One small glacial step forward, one giant political leap: US and China leaders in 'historic' greenhouse gas emissions pledge China and the US have unveiled new pledges on greenhouse gas emissions, as the leaders of the two countries met for talks in Beijing. US President Barack Obama said the move was "historic", as he set a new goal of reducing US levels between 26%-28% by 2025, compared with 2005 levels. China did not set a specific target, but said emissions would peak by 2030... ... The two countries together produce about 45% of the world's carbon dioxide... ... Republican leaders in the US reacted strongly to what they called an "unrealistic plan" proposed by Mr Obama... Will the American Republicans vote to destroy our planet for the sake of perpetrating a little political vandalism?... Ah, green isn't green ... or an energy company is an energy company be it fossil of "green" That IS a disturbing report :( To my knowledge, Spain does not have a brilliant record when it comes to bird conservation in particular. I wouldn't let this company anywhere near an environmentally sensitive area - and the economic arguments "for" the scheme struck me as ludicrous. Did I miss something? Proposal should be binned in my view. |

So as not to "corrupt" this thread - the article this post refers to can be found here Interested in people's views :) Is this... an opportunity to diversify Zambia’s economy while beginning to clean up the environmental degradation left by close to a century of intensive opencast mining. The environmental damage caused by the mining industry there, far exceeds that mentioned in the closing sentence above. :( Agriculture also comes at an environmental cost :( However, the crop in question grows like a weed there, so is unlikely to require much in the way of chemical additives to the soil... Do you think it could be the right step forward in weaning "Zambia off its addiction to mining by prioritising its fledgling agricultural sector"? Is this thinking outside the box or are they totally out of their box? :) Oooh... I felt like Martin there for a minute what with my questions :) |

Will the American Republicans vote to destroy our planet for the sake of perpetrating a little political vandalism?... And so they have, and so soon: Keystone XL pipeline approval passes House The US House of Representatives has passed a bill to approve the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline... ... The 875-mile (1,408km) pipeline would carry tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada, to the US state of Nebraska... ... President Barack Obama is said to take a "dim view" of the legislation, but has not directly threatened a veto... Wrong thread for this but perhaps we need to get the American politics to get more real about the world and the environment above and beyond their self-serving selfish ridiculous childish petty politics corruption fiasco. Huge solar plant lags in early production And more of the story is: ... Plants owners said they are learning on the fly to some extent. Thanks for that one. Interesting to see how it develops. Also rather interesting in how the weather has been so unusually cloudy! For all youse warmers--30 degrees F below NORMAL here in most of the United States. And your point is? This cold front was predicted a week ago or so when a cyclone went farther north than normal into Alaska and displacing the Artic cold mass. I would ask what unprecedented energies propeled that storm so far north? |
