In cinemas near you! All for very real, happening, now.

Musicwood The Film

Spring of 2014, and Musicwood is available on iTunes and Amazon Instant, and events continue to accrue! Hot off the heels of several screenings throughout the US and Canada, we recently got the news that Musicwood will be screening in the UK this summer as part of the touring UK Green Film Festival and in Washington DC in early June...

Musicwood

The most famous guitar-makers in the world band together on a journey into one of the most primeval forests on earth. Their struggle is with a Native American logging company, their hope: to save the acoustic guitar.

The Last Catch

European bluefin tuna can grow to the size of a passenger car – up to 5m long and weighing up to 600 kg. Once a year, schools of them migrate from the Atlantic to spawning grounds in the Mediterranean. It is a well-established fact that tuna stocks now face imminent collapse. Yet they are still being fished during spawning season, interrupting the natural cycle of replenishment.

The fishermen, too, are now facing extinction: ...

A desperate fight for survival is coming to a head. Who will weather the storm?

UK Green Film Festival Opening Gala: THE LAST CATCH

... Raffael stretches every legal loophole to the limit; his boats have repeatedly been impounded. Roger is one of the few who has stuck to the EU quotas, and is now forced to sell his boat. Roberto got out of the business years ago, and is now fighting for a fishing moratorium in a last-ditch effort to save the remaining spawning grounds.

In intense images the film tells a story of hope, disillusionment and desperation.

It exposes the mechanisms of a value chain which is destroying its own basis with a strategy based on short-sighted greed. In the end both the fish and the people lose.

The question remains: what can we do to stop it?...

All very desperate.

Short term greed and our world be damned... And it continues... Unabated until death.

All part of a Greek Tragedy for Humankind and for all on our only one planet?

Stupid or Not Stupid?

One small positive step in UK and wider politics?

Online on Monday 2nd June:

Avaaz - Meet the UK Climate Secretary

Watch the live webcast here at 1:30 Monday June 2nd

In days, Ed Davey, the Secretary of State for Climate Change, will be sitting down for an online meeting with Avaaz members to find out what voters want. Let’s make sure he hears loud and clear that we expect Britain to be a world-beater when it comes killing emissions. ...

... Davey needs to know that protecting the planet’s future is a serious vote winner. Use the form on the right to sign up and submit your question for him. The more of us involved the more clearly Davey will hear that message.

A reminder of the ultimate in the quest of "Business-with-no-morals"?

Sigourney Weaver on Alien sequel: 'There's more story to tell'

... Weaver suggested that its ongoing popularity is thanks to the films becoming strangely true to contemporary life. "Unfortunately we have a lot of corporations characterized by the same kind of greed [depicted in the film]. This whole idea of 'crew expendable' is unfortunately an idea that is very alive in our world ...

Is our planet really "expendable"?

All for the "bottom line"?

A fun example of world-wide communication gone social media viral?

Video teasing Kim Jong-un goes viral

A mash-up video poking fun at the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has been watched millions of times in China and around the world.

The video is cheekily named "Fat Guy Number 3" - a reference to the Kim family's supposed portliness - and, for three-and-half-minutes, it teases, and pokes fun at the North Korean leader [YouTube video here]...

... He's shown dancing, doing the splits, as a ballet dancer, with his trousers down, riding on the back of a pig - and many a surreal scenario in between. It's set to a catchy recent Chinese hit love song, Little Apple, by the Chopstick Brothers - which has been parodied a number of times...

A host of international leaders (or at least their superimposed heads) make appearances in the video too. US President Barack Obama is seen generally frolicking around in a light-hearted way. Russia's President Putin and the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also feature...

... Writing on his Weibo page, he said the video was "just for entertainment" and had no deeper political message. It was uploaded to the Chinese video-sharing site Tencent, where it's been watched more than 55 million times. YouTube is banned in China, but the video was later copied and uploaded there, and prompted a million views and comments from around the world. "Brilliant piece of mashup satire," wrote one person. "We, the people of China love this video, make part 2!" wrote another.

"It was very funny!" agrees Steve Tsang, head of the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies at the University of Nottingham. In general, he says, Chinese people see Kim Jong-un as "a cuddly, ridiculous man". That's in clear contrast to the official Chinese government line...

Fantastic for engaging a large part of the world for a good and a better understanding... Even the YouTube comments are unusually unspoilt by trolls so far.

Hopefully, it might wake up the despots to be less despotic?...

Just now followed by:

Climate change summit: Thousands join global protests

Protests in many countries to demand urgent action on climate change have kicked off, with over 2,000 marches taking place around the world.

The People's Climate March has been organised to call for action to curb carbon emissions ahead of the UN climate summit in New York next week.

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in Australia while protests are also getting under way in Europe.

The climax will be a march in New York...

Climate change: Thousands march across the UK

Thousands of people are taking part in a march for climate action in London - one of more than 2,000 marches taking place around the world.

Campaigners including actress Emma Thompson and singer Peter Gabriel have been marching along Embankment to a rally in Parliament Square...

And is any reminder of the ongoing effect of unabated industrial CO2 pollution needed?...

Climate impacts 'overwhelming' - UN

The impacts of [continued] global warming are likely to be "severe, pervasive and irreversible"...

Climate impacts report: Key findings

... the most comprehensive assessment yet of the effects of climate change on our planet...

All this is happening here and NOW.

Likely a very shrewd move. Will need one or two petrolheads on board to wean the world off oil or it will never happen.

I drive an LPG-converted car; no particulates, NOx or CO, and lower CO2 emissions than petrol or diesel.

I rarely heat the house (thermostat is set to twelve celcius, i like it there); don't have air-conditioning; and the shower, dishwasher and washing machine are all electric so i don't need hot water on standby.

Your move.

Showing around the world:

Black Ice - the story of the Arctic 30

When the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise set sailto protest the first ever oil drilling in the Arctic Ocean, none of the people on board could have known what was coming.

Seized at gunpoint by Russian special forces, the ‘Arctic 30’ were thrust into headlines all over the world, facing up to 15 years in prison and finding themselves at the centre of a bitter international dispute...

All a part of:

Russian authorities terminate investigation into "Arctic 30" protest after twelve months

Amsterdam, 1 October 2014 - Russia's Investigative Committee (IC) has ended a year-long investigation into a peaceful protest at an Arctic oil rig last year which led to the imprisonment of 28 activists and two freelance journalists who became known as the "Arctic 30"...

"Today's news brings great relief to the Arctic 30 and their families who have faced a year of uncertainty after an entirely peaceful protest. However, we cannot understand how it took the Investigative Committee a year to establish what was clear from the start: that these people are passionate activists, not pirates.

"In December the Arctic 30 received an amnesty when it became obvious that their treatment was unfair and disproportionate. Since this story began, the Investigative Committee has tried to bend the rule of law to persecute those who dare to oppose Arctic oil drilling. This persecution has had the opposite effect, and our movement is much stronger both in Russia and around the world.

"We will continue to take action in defence of the Arctic whether in Russia, the US or anywhere else. We have millions of people with us and the powerful wind of change in our sails."...

Now this I find absolutely stupid myself.

http://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-advice/korean-air-vp-under-fire-over-nuts-incident/story-fn6yjmoc-1227149374812

THE daughter of the CEO of Korean Air forced the purser off a plane bound for Seoul from New York after she was incorrectly served some nuts — delaying the flight and triggering a government probe, officials said Monday.

Cho Hyun-Ah, who is an executive vice president of the family-run flag carrier, insisted that the purser — the chief flight attendant — leave the plane just minutes before takeoff on Friday, Korean Air said.

Cho had taken exception to the arrival of some macadamia nuts she had not asked for, and to the fact that they were served in a packet rather than a bowl....

....One ministry official told AFP that Cho’s action had been “totally inappropriate”. Seoul’s main opposition party also called for a thorough probe, saying the daughter of Korean Air CEO Cho Yang-Ho had a responsibility to protect the airline’s image.

“Why did she have to make all that fuss because of some stupid macadamia nuts?” the New Politics Alliance for Democracy said.

“She soiled the reputation of our flag carrier,” it said.....

Some people just like to think way to much of themselves IMHO.

Cheers.
