If you are using Safari in order to upload your avatar, be sure to empty your cache. In order to do so, press ⌥⌘E, or use the Safari ▶ Empty Cache… menu item. If you don't, you may see your previous avatar instead of your newly uploaded one - Check your Forum Preference page to make sure. Those Mac users who had GraphicConverter (English & Deutsch) bundled with their System Discs can indeed use it. Begin with anything your heart desires, scale the image down to 100×100 pixels (Picture ▶ Size ▶ Scale… or ⌃⌘Y), and then select Picture ▶ Colors ▶ Change bit depth dynamically… or ⌃⌘0 to reduce your avatar to eight-bits (255 colors). I recommend that ☑Dither be enabled. Once you are done, you should save (File ▶ Save as… or ⇧⌘S) your avatar as a PNG. Make sure that ☑Save web ready (without resource) option is checked, otherwise your file will be too big to upload. Finally, select your avatar in the Finder and find out the file size by using File ▶ Get Info (⌘I). If it says 4KB on disk, you should be in the clear because file sizes are rounded up to the nearest four kilobytes. Play it safe by double-checking the (number bytes) listed in parenthesis. If it's more than 4096, you'll have to try again. Final note: If your avatar is monochromatic (greyscale), I recommend that you use the JPG/JPEG file format. Instead of using Change bit depth dynamically…, use Picture ▶ Colors ▶ Grayscale ▶ 256 Grays or ⌥⌘9 (Dithering shouldn't be necessary). Do not forget to tweak your file’s compression using the Options… button beside the file format list-menu. I recommend using the ⦿JPEG 6.0 with ☑Progressive, ☑Calculate File Size, and ☑Show Preview enabled. Use the Quality slider so that you acheive the best output in your preview box, while keepiing your overall file size under 4.0KB. Enjoy! |

I tried to use an image from http://www.spaceflightnow.com/ but I think they all have too many colors. Plus the copyright issue. www.onlinetasklist.com |

Nevermind -- they all probably all copyrighted. Too much trouble. Incidently, here are some pictures form the city where I live st. louis. Maybe I'll try to use one of those-- I'll work on it when I have time, and ask questions in this thread, if I have any. www.onlinetasklist.com |

Timmy, you are the greatest. I hope Santa is especially good to you this year and every year to come. These words just don't seem enough to express my gratitude. You can do something that I just cannot do. You are truly gifted! Thank you so much for my avatar. It seems that Berkeley recompresses already small-sized avatars even further that it has to. My avatar is a 972 byte PNG, but Berkley's copy is a 3.6 KB JPEG! And mine looks better to boot! Something is really screwed up there in Cali... @ Siran of Vulcan : Not to sound cynical, but aren't Vulcans devoid of emotion (for the most part)? What's with the smile like a Ferengi winning at Tongo? |
