Not reading much right now, but after reading a review about it I plan to buy and read "The Martian"

Again, not strictly hard science, but: "How Adam Smith Can Change Your Life",
Russ Roberts.

I just met Frances Mayes who wrote "Under the Tuscan Sun" and others about her reconstruction of a Farm house in Tuscany. She signed the two books of hers that I have and I tasted a few of her new line of wines.

Good, for you, William! I've read/re-read her book, "The Discovery of Poetry".
She's an excellent teacher of poetry. Perhaps, one day, I'll meet her.

If I may ask, Julie -- what is the title/subject of your monograph? :o)

I finished reading The Martian. This is one story that will most likely be better told as a movie with some wild special effects.

One can only hope that the first manned missions to Mars, or the moon for that matter, go better. But the author did, in my opinion, a good job of keeping the mishaps within the realm of possibility.

"The Outliers", by Malcom Gladwell.

It takes the tack that there's a lot of luck in what a person is able to accomplish; i.e., the month of the year a person was born (Jan. is ideal), and the year (several ideal periods; I was born in one -- 1936, when cohort competition was minimal, for, say, jobs and education).

Having a high IQ helps, but isn't the only criterion. M.G. gave an example,
with a man with one of 192, but who settled for less, in life, due to a series
of "bad luck".

For example, the translation says that E=mc^2 means that energy is mass times the speed of light times two. And it's not a typo, it says it several times.

For those unknowing, best mention that what should be said/described is not 'times' but "raised by the power":

"E=mc^2 means that energy is mass times the speed of light times the speed of light (speed of light SQUARED)"

Just making sure bad text isn't repeated uncorrected! Unfortunately, such as conspiracy theorists thrive on such silliness... :-(

Keep searchin',
Martin

Luckily that is one of the few things I remember. All the books by physicist's I have are at least 17 yrs old, time to re-read them and get some new one's ;o)
I'm not a complete idiot, but, I'm working on it.
