The dog will be euthanized. That dog would have been euthanized on the spot if it were my son.

It's the first time I've seen a cat chase a dog in defense of a human child, this cat must love that child like a mother, so the instinct to protect would be strong and the cat was good sized, well armed, and a very good kitty! :)

The boy was "mildly autistic" too, cats pickup on this. Cats are not stupid because they don't come when called, they are just ignoring us. The only reason cats started living with humans is because of the rodents we attract.

Dogs are completely different. If I would have been an animal, I would have been a dog, a crossing of flat golden retriever, colli and labrador:)

:) I did one of those "what kind of dog are you" quizz things and came out as a mongrel too Julie :) though I'm not sure they were inferring I descended from such high lineage :)

Re cats and autism: My son was non-verbal till he was nearly four... and then we got him a cat... :)

Re the news story: I'm always sad when I hear of a dog being destroyed in cases like these - of course it has to be done - but I often think there's an untold story of ill-treatment or mishandling in the dog's past (or even irresponsible breeding practises) and it's very rarely by the victim... :( which makes putting the dog down the only option :(

Good cat though wasn't it :)

The dog was a neighbors and it was usually out off a leash. Notice the dog went into hunting mode for some reason. Now that was in FloraDUH, an unleashed dog in New Jersey winds up in the pound.

I wonder if the dog sensed the autism and thought the boy would be easy prey. I also wonder how long the neighbor had the dog and if it was adopted. The owner is responsible for the dogs death. It looks like a nice neighborhood; that's good for the boy, he should get thousands for the pain, suffering and scaring.

Reminds me of a friend of mine, who's Daughter was attacked by a Sheppard. Tore her Face up. That dog has always been gentle and knew the kid.

We just need to remember, these are still wild animals. I would never take my dogs on a walk without a leach.

@Batter up My cats listen better than my dogs. Raised the dogs from infancy, so that might explain it ;)

Gonzo never walked on a leash, we were so connected there was no need for one. I communicate with Happy in a different way because she's a cat. Dogs need way more attention than a cat as well, that's a fact.

I misread that as "My cat listen better than my boys," I was nodding in agreement.

My cat comes running home when I call her. The boys not so much. I had to threaten to spend my stepson's wages on a new dishwasher before he would come home and do the washing up.

More Cheers as Tara the Hero Cat Throws Out 1st Pitch

The cheers keep coming for Tara the tabby cat: Last week, she was seen saving her owner's 4-year-old son from an attack by a neighborhood dog. Last night, she and the boy threw out the first pitches at a minor league baseball game.

I know that this story puts a lot of blame on the Dog but in reality the Dog is not at fault.
The owners of the dog are the ones at fault.
This dog should have never been loose to begin with

To many owners of Pets do not take responsibility and train their pets wrong.
Dogs have been trained by people to attack humans.
No matter if that dog or its children have been trained the training carries through to the children to become instinct.
My 22 pound Maine Coon tabby cross ( Leonidas) was walking with me one day and a pit bull who was also being walked by her owner decided to come at Leo.
Mistake!!! Huge mistake!!!
Leo jumped on its back and bit hard into the back of dogs neck and Leo just went to town on the poor things face with his back claws.I have never seen him act this way and I believe it was a shocker to the Dog as well.
The owner of the Dog threatened to call animal control.
I reminded her that is was her dog that started it. Just so happened that Leo finished it.

He was protecting himself and me. The entire incident took seconds.

There is an old saying and it's very true.
Dogs serve, cats rule!

So you too are a minion to a feline Michael... :)

I absolutely agree. Every dog attack can be traced back to something the animal cannot be blamed for, and it always saddens me that whilst they can be our best friends, too often we fail to be theirs.

So glad Leo is okay :) It usually only takes one cat to teach a dog a lesson it will never forget... that cats come brimming with a tremendous quantity of sharp bits tucked inside those velvety paws :) and pretty good teeth too.

I am so very much a cat owner or better put a pet of my cats.
My avatar is Leo
He has taught me how to be a Human being.

I had found out that I was very sick (HIV) and went on a rampage with drugs and more drugs.
A very good friend had seen what was going on with me and came to me with a box.
I opened it and there he was. Little boy of just over 6 weeks.
A note was with the box and it said "You take care of me and I'll take care of you"

The very next day the drugs were gone and I had my life back...with a new addition.
2 years later a female was also given to me.
They had 25 children in a 3 year period. I had to get Sam fixed

I found good homes for all. 2 I gave to my Mom.
We have 4 in this house

They are just wonderful but Leo is more like my Son than just a pet.
12 almost 13 years old now.
I can't imagine life without him and Sam

It must have been a very scary time getting the diagnosis :( I'm so sorry. I'm glad you had Leo arrive in your life to help you turn things around to something more positive! :) Getting my autistic son a cat transformed all our lives :) I occasionally have nightmares in which we didn't and where he stayed lost to us forever. Makes waking up to find one of our cats sitting on my face much more pleasant than I usually find it :)
