My dog eats anything, if your eating it he will also. if the stooles are hard we give him carrotes or pumpkin (per say Vet). with it's dog food. since mine is so old it has a hard time making from point a to b without peeing on the floor. I'm not going to put him down because of that. live with it is what i say. I love Dog and hope i have a few more years with him. Smart as a whip too.

Seeing the problem is one thing but animals are all different, I have no answers and thats why I started this thread to see some answers or suggestion to help with what we have.

Well, my sister did have considerable luck with both dogs and cats that were ill with distemper. I believe the science behind the disease is that the first thing to be affected is their sense of smell. Much like when we rely heavily on ours to build up an appetite, they stop eating and hydrating themselves when they lose theirs, which weakens their immune system meaning many of them succumb frighteningly quickly. Obviously it's much better that they're vaccinated, but in Africa, many aren't because of the prohibitive costs involved. Something really should be done to help bring the cost down, because the disease (which was once unknown in the wildlife of that continent) is now endemic :(

Anyway... moving on...

She pulled many back from the brink by making a very liquid solution of their normal food, and syringing no more than a ml or so of it into the side of their mouth every few hours, alternating it with similar amounts of water. Within twenty four hours there was a marked improvement and within a day of that they were seeking out their food bowls as usual.

So - I am going to put all the advice I've received here, together with that tip, and attempt introducing some proper food to my little madam - even if she only gets it into her through attempting to wash it off where she spat it out :)

That's nice Annie, my GF has a vet who lives out of the country now she has known for many years. He is going to be back in town in August to help fill in for vacations. I'd like to ask him what they do for that when I take Dog in for a check up. Who knows he might want to meet your freind, He lives in Italy now.
Cheers everybody

Okaaaaaaaaaaay ... a few scratches ... and two jealous siblings-who-want-the-same-treatment-even-though-they-don't-need-it later... :) more proper food remains out of her than in... but she is still happy to curl up on my lap, which I will take as a sign that she doesn't hate me... yet :)

Grant - Italy - that'd be a big call out fee :) just as well he's a friend!

Grace has a history of throwing up, though since I switched dry food from Science Diet to Evolve it's a bit less, there is no corn in Evolve I think and it's available locally. The canned food I give Her is from Stater Bros, it's the stores brand in Salmon Dinners and Chicken Dinners, She likes what She eats, She's almost like a vacuum cleaner when eating, though I only need to add a cup of Evolve once a week to Her dry food bowl, the canned food I divide one 6oz can over 4 days. As to what She throws up, I found that if I clean up some of what I can get immediately, the rest will mostly clean up with a vacuum cleaner wand when dry, the rest of the way will require either more time or some Oxy carpet cleaner.

Here's a slow-feed bowl for kitties who eat too quickly and then throw up:

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=20531

Other types have openings so the kitty has to "work" for his food:

http://aikiou.com/stimulo-cat-interactive-feeder/

Hope this helps.

Now that is a good idea CC! One of my girlies has a tendency towards low blood sugar and gobbles down food a bit too fast if she over-snoozes... and then loses it all pretty much straight away :/

Sorry - needed a lie down there - brain went into melt down just nanoseconds after applying the term "over-snoozes" to a cat.

If you put out enough food in front of Dog ( my dog) he will eat untill he throws up, so we control his input pretty close. But he is also happy with a big fat meaty bone for hours.

Grace doesn't eat too fast, My last cat didn't throw up until after I'd moved here, so I think it has to do with either the water or the dust from the dry lake bed, as the throwing up is not all the time.

The quality of pet foods does make a difference, but usually, they higher quality, the higher the cost. Here is a quick break down of the common foods for cats.

In case you didn't know this, Grace is a Maine Coon cat, cats don't eat bones... Though they do sometimes chase bad dogs...

One of my dogs had a real passion for cheese. It was in the early days of getting him home from an animal shelter that we discovered that. My daughter had left her cheese sandwich unattended for about twenty minutes and in the twenty first minute he crumbled poor love. It's the only time he ever stole food and he was so ashamed of himself. :( I took to "recycling" marrow bones by putting a little cheese inside for him. Kept him busy for hours :)

French Fries are not good for us and bad for dogs. Too much grease and possibly salt.

Our cats got a daily dose of milk and bread. Got their protein in other ways. My parents never got them shots or neutered them.

I am taking better care of my Granimals.

Dog has had a few fries over the years and probably less than i had in one night with fish. He just got out of the vet's since he hurt his back bad an he was coming off of med's. we stopped at Arbys and man he had the munchies and you would have thought he was smoking pot. But maybe once or twice since he ate any of them. Veggies he eats the hell out of them, all the time with his dog food. (helps lower the cost of food too) Dog food is so expensive these days as you well know. The vet said no, grapes, Onions and chocolate.

His new trick he hit the garbage can, I cought him last week and now the garbage is up so he can't get it. Hell he eats more than I do. He never gets ham or chicken bones which we know is a No No.
