So, I'm stuck in the Stone Age and still use dial-up (at 28.8, since that's all the phone lines can handle). Also, I'm using a Mac. SETI was working pretty well for the last week or so, because I'd been connected for most of the day, apparently when it wanted more work. (I had it set to ask before connecting) However, earlier today it finished working and refused to connect to get more work, saying it's deferring communication for 8 days. I'm guessing this is because it kept trying to connect and couldn't (several times), increasing the deferment each time. I've since set it to not ask when connecting, but I can't get it to update preferences for SETI or climateprediction (it says it can't find the projects), and it won't connect to SETI in the next week. Is there any way to kill this deferment, and is there any way to update my prefs? I've tried running BOINC with command-line options -update_prefs setiathome.berkeley.edu and -update_prefs climateprediction.net, and neither worked. Thanks! |

You need the full URL to -update_perfs I believe. ie http://setiathome.berkeley.edu I don't have any real advice for getting it to work better with dial-up though. Dealing with intermittant connections is one area that BOINC is way behind in. BOINC WIKI BOINCing since 2002/12/8 |

Ok, that worked, at least with cp.net. (boinc still doesn't want to talk with seti for another week.) Thanks! |

Left Click "Projects" - Right Click "Seti Home" And Left Click Update. That should Jump start your system and it will Talk to Seti and make your corrections. It will download more work for You too. Ok, that worked, at least with cp.net. (boinc still doesn't want to talk with > seti for another week.) Thanks! > |

I don't have any experience with the Mac OS but I found on XP that if you allow your PC to do the disconecting it works better that setting that in BOINC prefrences.Especialy with networking,Setting the "let seti disconnect" makes everything go haywire. I Refuse to hold myself responsible for any of my actions. si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes |

> Ok, that worked, at least with cp.net. (boinc still doesn't want to talk with > seti for another week.) Thanks! Cool! I made notes for my Mac install in the BOINC Owner's Manual and you can see the start up script I made. For some reason it does not always want to hide after start-up, and hangs on restarts until I manually kill it. I did not spend a lot of time on it as I know that the new Cross-Platform GUI will render it OBE (overtaken by events) ... |
