Have a great time lurking in Devon Chris! :) Hello everyone. Thought we'd accidentally caught a non-stop train to Brighton coming home tonight. Fortunately we didn't have to wave at London but were able to get off at Kings Cross :)

That's OK I know they all stop at East Croydon, so you could have said hello!!

Or at least waved!!

PS I live about 2 mins walk from the London to Brighton railway line.

East Croydon!! :) MUCH more salubrious than Kings Cross at 11.30pm... :/ Will remember for next time Bernie :)

{unlurk}

As Bernie knows, I lived in Mitcham from 1948 to 1956, only a stones throw away, and can remember cycling around Croydon in the pre Coronation days aged 8 or so. I was quite upset to see what happened to Reeves Corner in the riots of 2011, whatever one may think of Croydon, it didn't deserve that. As an outsider, the view was that Croydon was generally seen as a place to shop, not a place to live, and was in four separate "quarters". West Croydon as in Downtown, East Croydon as Uptown, South Croydon as a residential area, and New Addington, which is best not mentioned in polite company. Bernie would probably strongly disagree!

Even today, when South London Councils get planning applications for extensive retail developments, you get the response "What are you trying to do, turn us into a second Croydon!". Sorry, but that is still the perception today, although unfair I admdit. Simple fact, Croydon has a PR problem. Croydon has changed radically from the times 60 years ago when I first knew it, and today it is quite a nice place that I like, and the Centrale shopping centre is impressive. The Croydon Tramlink is superb and I use it regularly, as it has a link to Wimbledon, and a proposed future link on to Kingston if the Borough Unitary Plan ever gets funded.

I can recommend the local Italian Restaurants :-)))

A week, approximately, having passed since I last read this thread, there were a number of posts I wished to reply to yesterday, but the outrage started before I could, and then I was gone for the rest of the day. So now I will disregard all of that and just give a silly reply to this post instead:

"This is Zaphod Beeblebrox from Betelgeuse Five, you know, not bloody Martin Smith from Croydon!"

Are any of those Italian restaurants actually spaceships with Bistromathic drive?

Yep even then it was in insult, ie,"This is the most import person in the Galaxy, not the least important, from the least important place" apparently most of the "Martin Smiths form Croydon" left shortly afterwards by unknown means.

I can say that at least three of the Italian restaurants practice bistromaths and two are no longer there so who knows!!
