The ONLY way that Canada and the US could currently merge would be a junk bond style takeover of the US national debt by a functional, fiscally viable Canada. We would be insane to assume any part of the US debt under any other circumstances. Control in the future merged nation would have to be apportioned by net value prior to the takeover (assets minus debt).

We could then start to sell off assets to get the debt down to a manageable level. Sell Hawaii to Japan, Alaska to Russia, etc.
That would work with most types of debtor situations. You should start small and repossess New Jersey.

Who's the guy in the tuque? He said he came to take our stuff.

As an Aussie who spent time in the US before living in Nova Scotia it's clear to me that such an arrangement wouldn't work.

Wouldn't seem to bring much benefit either.

Though I've always enjoyed calling Canadians American. Hehe.

Canada is not happy with US; we won't take their oil and we need a passport to cross the boarder now. Well we need a passport to get back anyway. What is a "passport"?

As an American citizen I find it quite offensive that I need a passport to to come home, I feel that is part of my birthright.

Well you shouldn't have left in the first place. If it isn't available in the US of A you don't need it.

That is not the point. If I want it, can afford it and it is innocuos I think the bill of rights guarantees that.

From what I read the US imports most of Canada's oil. Canadian oil companies want to build pipelines to the Pacific coast allowing export to Asia but are being blocked in court by native Canadians who demand a piece of the action and more extensive safety precautions/

So, if one can pass from US to Canada without a passport, what happens when you try to go home?

Years ago I would average once a month visiting Canada on business for Northern Telecom.

I used to point out that an overweight guy in a cheap suit carrying duty-free booze and having a Tennessee driver's license must be an American.

Didn't some of the 9/11 hijackers have US driver's licences? I used to have a California driver's licence. And a cheap suit.

If one has a passport certainly. I was wondering if some people who don't have a passport find themselves trapped in Canada.

I wouldn't risk that, if I knew I couldn't get back in the US. I also think it's silly that an American can't even go back to his own country in a case like that. A drivers license or other ID to prove you're American wouldn't be enough then? Strange...

I.D. documents can cause some funny incidents...

On my first ever leave from Germany & travelling in civvies I landed at Heathrow & walked through customs. Being asked for my passport I presented it only to be told quite aggressively that I was in the wrong queue & aliens to be in the other channel.

Getting annoyed by that, another officer asked what's the problem & seeing my passport agreed with his colleague but in a more pleasant manner.

"so this don't count then?" showing them my valid MOD90 I.D. card. The second officer passed me through with a smile.

As Clyde said in another thread, some people really do deserve the "Golden Finger" award :-)

I haven't been back to Canada since more than a drivers license and birth certificate are required. From what I read intense questioning and searching of property and person. Some people cross back and forth several times a day so boarder states are working on enhanced driver's licenses that will show the holder is a fine American; those states along with Canada want to make it as easy as possible to cross for economic reasons. The US did make it easier to cross by car; one can get a wallet size card along with a passport; it is good only crossing by car from Canada.

The boarder is so long and unguarded it is mostly for show. The potted plants are a recent addition though.

The Yanks who wind up here without a passport can usually get back into the US, after a loooong questioning and waiting in a US Customs office till verification is obtained through other sources. If you show up at the border late on a Friday you may wait till Monday for the paperwork to be processed.

If that happens who pays for the overnight lodging, Canada, USA, or the victim?
