on 1 of July 2014 James Sotherden wrote the following: Part of the appeal for me about the movie Independence day. Is that when we stupid humans are at risk of being wiped out. We unite and fight back as one species. Its a nice dream . Hi James, I agree with you ... Good post and thank you so much. Just think what we humans could do if all the Nations of the planet earth lived in co-operation with each other :) Best Wishes Byron Best Wishes Byron |

what do think about Carl Sagan's words - (quoted below) - written 34 years ago - (1980) ?? the following Copy and Paste is from Carl Sagan's 1980 Book - "Cosmos" Shortly after release, Cosmos became the best-selling science book ever published in the English language, and was the first science book to sell more than half a million copies. As the ancient myth makers knew, we humans are children equally of the earth and the sky. In our tenure on this planet we humans have accumulated dangerous evolutionary baggage, propensities for aggression and ritual, submission to leaders, hostility to outsiders, all of which puts our survival in some doubt. But we've also acquired compassion for others, love for our children, a desire to learn from history and experience and a great soaring passionate intelligence, the clear tools for our continued survival and prosperity. Which aspects of our nature will prevail is uncertain, particularly when our visions and prospects are bound to one small part of the small planet Earth. But up there in the Cosmos an inescapable perspective awaits. the above Copy and Paste is from Carl Sagan's 1980 Book - "Cosmos" Shortly after release, Cosmos became the best-selling science book ever published in the English language, and was the first science book to sell more than half a million copies. read more about Carl Sagan here: http://www.carlsagan.com/ what do think about Carl Sagan's words - (quoted above) - written 34 years ago - (1980) ?? |

what do think about Carl Sagan's words -(quoted below) - written 34 years ago - (1980) ?? the following Copy and Paste is from Carl Sagan's 1980 Book - "Cosmos" The yield of the Hiroshima bomb was only thirteen kilotons, the equivalent of thirteen thousand tons of TNT. The Bikini test yield was fifteen megatons. In a full nuclear exchange, in the paroxysm of thermonuclear war, the equivalent of a million Hiroshima bombs would be dropped all over the world. At the Hiroshima death rate of some hundred thousand people killed per equivalent thirteen-kiloton weapon, this would be enough to kill a hundred billion people. But there were less than five billion people on the planet in the late twentieth century. Of course, in such an exchange, not everyone would be killed by the blast and the firestorm, the radiation and the fallout - although fallout does last for a longish time: 90 percent of the strontium 90 will decay in 96 years; 90 percent of the cesium 137, in 100 years; 90 percent of the iodine 131 in only a month. what do think about Carl Sagan's words -(quoted above) - written 34 years ago - (1980) ?? the above is a Copy and Paste is from Carl Sagan's 1980 Book - "Cosmos" http://www.carlsagan.com/ what do think about Carl Sagan's words written 34 years ago - (1980) ?? |

Byron - Carl Sagan is one of my heroes! :) His words resonate just as relevantly in today's world as they did decades ago when he wrote them. Perhaps study of his works should be a compulsory requirement for all the world's politicians before they're ever allowed to take public office. It would do no harm, and might do us all, a lot of good... |

Thanks for the excerpt Byron, again :) It was actually through Carl Sagan that I first learned just how dodgy Pythagorus's "theories" were, once you stepped back from his mathematics. As to your quote from Eisenhower - the sentiments expressed in them are to be commended :) Sadly, his inner man perhaps did not get enough of a say in public office, swayed in a world that had gone mad with nuclear frenzy... |

Eisenhower's "inner man" had Pvt. Eddie Slovik executed for not wanting to kill other human beings. That law is still on the books BTW. Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) |

As to your quote from Eisenhower - the sentiments expressed in them are to be commended :) Sadly, his inner man perhaps did not get enough of a say in public office, swayed in a world that had gone mad with nuclear frenzy... :( As I was saying... world gone mad :( It was the general consensus worldwide to do precisely that to "deserting" soldiers. Now... many countries know better... not all of their citizens do though... evidenced by the law still being on your statute books :( |

You are very lucky to be able to look at the wold from an ivory tower. |

Of course I remember him... being dragged backwards and forwards around the forum. I was just reading some of your posts about him actually... You are very lucky to be able to look at the wold from an ivory tower. Which ivory tower is that Batterup? :) I do hope it's still growing on the elephant... :/ won't catch me near it otherwise. Not sure about the "lucky" bit either :) but it could be worse :) |

Which ivory tower is that Batterup? :)The one where ISIS doesn't come in and kill all the men and make you wear a burka. It's nice to say we should all join hands and sing but the world is a nasty place. |
