NASA has released its grand plans for the future.

http://www.news.com.au/technology/science/nasa-planning-to-send-mankind-to-mars-and-hijack-an-asteroid/story-fnjwlcze-1226879874106

NASA has mapped out its grand plans for future space exploration including the idea to send mankind to Mars and hijacking an asteroid.

At a hearing called “From Here to Mars”, William Gerstenmaier, an associate administrator at NASA, outlined its missions in the works — with one project intended to send a manned spacecraft to an asteroid then use technology to knock it into orbit around the moon.

I just hope that they don't miscalculate with the asteroid.

Cheers.

NASA is talking about plans for manned missions to Mars for decades, but it never gets the required money. Unless Obama puts the money in (and he's not), this is another Constellation program.

Of course he's not, the USA is as good as 'bankrupt'. They will have to ask the money to the Chinese or the Russians I guess...

We don't have to be bankrupt. We could require that nations that use us as their police force and/or defacto military pay for that service.

A bit too late now for that but Obama can give it a shot, who knows...

What nations? I think it's the opposite, the US act as the police regardless nobody calls them.

You have a point there yo but the US have done a lot of good things too. Their social system is hardly existent though imo, they should better invest more in that, take care of their own people who didn't have the means or opportunities to make it in this world. Belgium's social system is too existent otoh, if you don't want to work, there's always an income here for you...

Who is going to insure moving an asteroid? What would be the cost of another Yucatan strike?

The most recent was Poland and Lithuania. They smell a bear at the gate.

I would also only pay a fair share of our UN dues.
U.S. contributions to the UN in 2010 totalled: $7,691,822,000
That's 22% of the total.

I saw an animated video of the proposed tug and capture device. The asteroid in the animation looks to be pretty small. The whole arrangement looks pretty doable. And if they plan to put in orbit around the moon that hints at having a moon base to access it. Our space navigation of unmanned vehicles is very sophisticated and I would not be worried about it striking the earth.

Well, it will be interesting to see how Mars One does. I'm still skeptical that the Netherlands group can build the infrastructure necessary in the timeframe they've outlined, but NASA isn't really blazing any trails, either.

Mars One is only a means for taking money from people that don't know about space. C'mon, a Mars trip will cost at least $10 billion (R&D + manufacturing + launch costs). Does anybody really think they can get that money selling t-shirts and raffling off seats?

There are people who are farsighted enough to know that someday some of us will move off of this planet and settle on the moon, Mars or one of the larger asteroids. We've got to start somewhere and these or people like them are the ones who will be the first to colonize our solar system. It is likely that the first few attempts will fail just like the first few attempts by europeans to colonize the Americas.

I really don't think Mars One is a scam, but it does seem like pie in the sky. I would like to hear Richard Branson, Paul Allen, and Burt Ratan's thoughts on Mars One.

I agree.

We've got to start somewhere that makes sense. They are like people constructing a pool because they need to train to reach America swimming.

I think Inspiration Mars or even Mars Direct makes a lot more sense. IM has $300-400 million already and it doesn't intend to land on Mars, only orbit Mars. MD doesn't intend to go to Mars, only to develop technologies and do public outreach so that some space agency goes to Mars.

When I made my last post I had missed that Yo's post was about the Mars One project. I too believe that project has little chance of coming to fruition but I wouldn't go so far as to call it a scam. My remarks were about the future plans of NASA, which was the initial subject of this thread.

Sorry Bob; I didn't mean to change the direction of your thread. I just haven't heard much about NASA's future astronaut directive. It's too bad it takes a Cold War to get things done.

There is a thread about NASA and the military running separate programs; 1985 was the last classified NASA mission. The military isn't interested in manned ships it's all about the drones.

That is why the US military isn't concerned that we need the Russians to get a man in space but NASA is.
