Certainly you could interpret the situation that way, but such an interpretation does not change the nobility of the character that was created. There is nothing wrong with having a fictional/mythical character as a role model. At the risk of having my post whisked away to Politics, I would argue that such is the basis of religion.

I don't think anybody 'loved being lied to' when the truth came out. Many of us were very hurt at that time.
Once the truth did come out, some opinions softened a bit to express a slight bit of acknowledgement of the creativity it took to maintain such an artificial persona for so long.

Annie and I have established that she spent some of her time in South Africa living about 5 km away from where I currently reside. (And I've taken the liberty of sharing this snippet of information without her blessing, but I figure she won't mind - I hope I'm right!)
