Uhh... Geo-Synchronous orbit is quite a bit higher than 1000 miles...

35786 km or 22236 miles up...

Though, to be truly useful, the cable is gonna have to be considerably longer. Perhaps as much as 144000 km or 89000 miles long.

While carbon nano-tubes may have the necessary tensile strength, maybe, the challenge is in making sure the cable has no imperfections at the microscopic level. That, and it is going to have to be constructed in geosynchronous orbit, and raised up and lowered down at the same time.

This presents enormous technical and engineering challenges. It is going to make the Project Apollo effort (that landed men on the Moon) look like a schoolyard farting contest.

Worth pursuing? Yes. Easy? No.

Am I missing something here? It looks like a post was removed.

If so, let's pray we don't get another politically gelded piece of junk that kills crews.
In case you're unaware, both the booster design and the tile heat shield design were political decisions, not engineering ones.

Well I have no knowledge of the reasoning for the tile design, but I do know a little about one element of the SRBs. Instead of being one continuous tube they were constructed in 80' segments, hence the need for "O" rings. One of the specs required that the SRBs were to be transported from their manufacture point to their assembly point via rail. This and other factors were intended to involve businesses scattered around the country employing thousands of workers/voters. They once bragged that there were only a few congressmen/women who'se district did not have companies involved in the space program. So, if they voted to cut funding for NASA, jobs would be lost angering voters who lost those jobs. I think this is part of why everything contracted by NASA always went over budget. SpaceX and the other new private ventures are not obligated to source components all over the country and can have things made where it makes sense.

Back to the shuttle, the SRBs could have been made near where the rockets were launched and in one piece resulting in no unnecessary "O" rings and possibly no loss of Challenger.

A more important question is, What if Russia tells NASA to stuff it. No more rides to or from the ISS. So we send astronuats to and from in a cargo rocket? That should be a fun ride.

Washington is run by dolts. And the sad part is we elected them.

Thank you for supporting my original point that political not engineering decisions were in play. Which was exactly my point.

If «NASA cutting ties with Russia…»! When Seti@Home will do the same?
Especially for You, the news from Russia! Russian news, April 6, 2014: "Russia takes back Alaska ..., Russia intends regain Alaska ... and part of territory in California and the Hawaiian Islands!", look at the this beastliness https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cJxTUsaNeE
This people and the ruling regime of this country will grab all around: from Earth and Moon - unto planets and the Universe!
I can not even imagine what would happen if Russia will announce us their right for on their "exclusive dialogue" with extraterrestrial civilizations (ET)!
Who should I contact? Dr. David P. Anderson, Dr. Eric Korpela and et al to project staff?
I ask STOP sending WU for Russian! I want to read header: «Seti@Home cutting ties with Russia…»
I hope you have understood me! I ask of understanding and support my opinions, American and European brothers and sisters, and normal people around the World!

Не хочешь - не считай. Кончай тут троллить. С твоим гиганским вкладом в этот проект тебе тут только и командовать кому чего рассылать.

EDIT:

So, any more doubts what this specimen in appearance?
