What is going on?

Oh wow. My cousin and his family just sold their house and are planning to move right onto one of those orange dots to be missionaries.

Scientists believe that Mount St. Helens is recharging after a swarm of small earthquakes were detected under it.

Cheers.

FINALLY, the San Ramon and Danville quakes have subsided!!! It's been a few months since I've felt anything. :-)

However; just 'cause I'm not feeling them doesn't mean they're not happening... :-O

Mt St Helens, aka: the powder keg or the ex-Mt Fuji of the Eastern Pacific, it would be nice if MSH would just go to sleep, for the next 1000 years, but that is probably too much to ask for.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network has detected more than 130 earthquakes, between 1.2 and 4 miles deep, in the area since March 14.

The majority of the quakes have been small, magnitude 0.5 or less. Scientists also say there are many more quakes happening that are too small to detect.

Researchers say there is no direct indication of an eruption anytime soon.

“No anomalous gases, increases in ground inflation or shallow seismicity have been detected with this swarm, and there are no signs of an imminent eruption,” USGS scientists wrote. “As was observed at Mount St. Helens between 1987-2004, recharge can continue for many years beneath a volcano without an eruption.”

Scientists say the quakes are volcano-tectonic, indicating a slip on a small fault, and are commonly seen in active magma systems. The stress pushes fluid through cracks, creating the small tremors.

“The magma chamber is likely imparting its own stresses on the crust around and above it, as the system slowly recharges. The stress drives fluids through cracks, producing the small quakes. The current pattern of seismicity is similar to swarms seen at Mount St. Helens in 2013 and 2014; recharge swarms in the 1990s had much higher earthquake rates and energy release.”

Yeah, below 2.5 and Humans can't feel them, below 0.5 and instruments can't feel them, which I didn't know before today, the 0.5 that is.

Last weekend I was talking with a friend I have know for about 6 months now. He makes guitars and told me his first sale was the day St Helens blew last time. He asked if I remembered that day. I do. I was in Moscow Idaho for a Renaissance faire. He said that was where he sold his first guitar. All these years and He and I were at the same place same time.

So since we have met again, guess it's time for St Helens to blow again.

Then this.

Watch what 'The Big One' on the San Andreas fault would feel like

A top seismology expert this week reminded Southern California that a major earthquake on the southern San Andreas fault is long overdue.

But exactly what kind of quake, of course, is impossible to know.

Speaking at an earthquake conference this week in Long Beach, Thomas Jordan, director of the Southern California Earthquake Center, said the infamous fault was “locked, loaded and ready to roll."

Thankfully MSH is not in California, just in Oregon, though when it blows,
the volcanic 'ash' will be shared far and wide, depending on the wind direction of course.

Oops, My bad. Still that's one of the Cascade Range Volcanoes, of which Mt Shasta is a member.
