In an area as geologically active as the Los Angeles area, how do you tell the difference?

I'd be more concerned if it were happening in the Bakersfield or Lost Hills areas of the San Joaquin Valley, which are geologically quiet, but have both fracking and steam injection going on.....

I don't know that, the USGS might know. Maybe by any permits to drill that might have been issued, that and knowing when any drilling is taking place. LA used to have lots of oil wells, notably on and around Signal Hill CA, that city had them almost everywhere when I was growing up, plus there were wells in the San Fernando Valley too. In Long Beach CA just off the coast there are some wells camouflaged as islands. In Culver City there were oil wells, slant drilling was talked about there. I'm sure there were wells in a lot of places in LA County, most didn't last and were capped, that doesn't mean they all became dry holes, just that it wasn't economical to pump anymore in some cases.

In Sichuan China in 2008, there was a Dam that activated an ancient fault, that made the land in one area rise by 30 feet.

All these and a few more were mentioned by the Weather Channel and of course Oil/Gas Companies will deny that Fracking causes EarthQuakes, they would lose lots of Money, in the millions at the very least..

The largest recorded earthquake in Oklahoma history was likely triggered by the injection of wastewater from oil production into wells deep beneath the earth, according to a study published Tuesday in the scientific journal Geology.

The magnitude 5.7 earthquake, which struck in 2011 near Prague in central Oklahoma, is the largest and most recent of a number of quakes scientists have tied to wastewater injection from oil and natural gas production, raising new concerns about the practice.

Several homes were damaged in the earthquake that hit central Oklahoma on November 6,
2011. The injection of wastewater from oil production into abandoned oil wells was the likely
cause, according to a new study.

And the consensus is that the quakes are getting bigger as time goes on while drilling is going on, this is in areas that were quiet(earthquake wise) for longer than recorded history. Wait till you have a 7.0 quake, each 0.1 rise in magnitude is 10 times bigger than the previous magnitude, a 7.0 is 130 times bigger(worse) than a 5.7 quake, here in CA We're used to quakes.

Most places(houses/buildings) outside CA aren't built to handle a quake, buildings not secured(bolted down) to a foundation will slide off a foundation in a quake, no shear panels(wafer board), in the past brick buildings that were unreinforced(reinforced w/steel rods and concrete) collapsed, usually killing people. Some buildings would sink into the ground cause of liquefaction(think quicksand almost). Bridges would either fully or partly collapse.

I have a healthy skepticism in "studies". I've seen more than a few that were shown to be wrong. In the 50's-60's era there were studies" that showed that we'd be out of oil in ~20 years. We aren't. In the 70's they were saying we were headed for another ice age. Didn't happen. Food "studies" that changed back and forth (bad for you, good for you)are numerous. Y2K was supposed to be a disaster. It wasn't.

Earthquakes? They were happening before fracking and they happen where fracking isn't going on. Seems to me that mankind is too quick to find reasons to blame mankind for all the worlds ills or what man perceives to be ills. Whose is to say that the quake in fracking country wouldn't have happened anyway...fracking or not? Perhaps fracking is one cause....perhaps not. I'll remain skeptical until proven beyond any doubt. And that hasn't happened yet. Theories aren't enough.

What is the Science Channels motto? Question everything....or something like that.
