Finally got fed up with using the onboard graphics on my workhorse (gpu slot died), so upgrading M/B, Ram & CPU.

Have ordered the FX 8320 eight core which should arrive in a few days. I have never liked using stock coolers and the Evoblue 90 currently in use is showing its age.

Reading many of the reviews it has been stated that the cpu runs very hot. Can anyone recommend a decent 3rd party (air) cooler?

Case in use is a Coolermaster R1000 with 4x 120mm fans.

I would like to ask, do you have a preference on the type of cooler? Do you want only a fan or do you want liquid cooler? Is there a price range. I have a similar 8 core that came with a liquid cooler. It's similar to this corsair (of course not made by them)

Only problem is it sits up above the GPU outlet and pulls in the hot air from below. Fortunately where I have it, it also gets A/C from above so it keeps the temp at around 40 C max. I tried pulling up your case from google but couldn't get an accurate look at it to see if you have room for 2-120 on the top to pull hot air up and out. If you do, then another option would be this one

This way you won't be pulling hot air in from the GPU outflows. If you don't want liquid but only want fans, then I would look at

as long as you don't mind the colored LED.. Just some ideas...What specifically were you looking for? Price range?

@ Zalster Price not an issue also air. The R1000 came with 4x120mm fans. 2 at top 1 at bottom & 1 exhaust

Received the M/B, Ram, cpu & gpu on Saturday but had to wait until today to receive the cooler. The gpu is a GT630 2gb, any good for crunching?

Do you run the cooler fans from the cpu fan header or do you use separate power for each of them? Also, that looks like a quality cooler so thanks for the tip.

I use the fan header as required.
Since one fan is 120 and the other is 140 mm its controlled by MB.

Evenso the thermal grease is important.
I use MX-4 instead of the noctua grease.
Got additional 2 °C down.

Only got a couple of issues (I always get at least one on installing M/B's),

It's not seeing both optical drives and have installed a fresh clean copy of boinc & it has only downloaded one wu ???

Edit: Now downloading 78 with 8 running :-)

Also, with the way the cooler is installed, it just leaves approx. 2mm between cooler fan and exhaust fan....

...nice.

It will be an interesting comparison between your cruncher with the FX8320 and a single GT630 and mine with an FX8350 and a pair of GTX780s.
I would expect yours to be a fair representation of CPU only processing thus allowing us to see the contribution made by the pair of '780s on mine.

(Unless you decide to shove set of 780ti in which case "all bets are off")

If it was a cruncher only rig, I would more than likely consider it, but it is my workhorse, so no chance (do have gpu crunching on gpugrid though with very little noticeable affect).

Haven't had this situation arise on any of my rigs in a long time. Over an hour ago, rig suddenly froze & after waiting a short time resorted to rebooting.

For nearly forty five minutes, it kept getting to the log in point then froze, so shutdown. After letting it cool down somewhat, rebooted and able to log in.

All cores running at 100% & over 54c with gpu at 67c. Suspended gpu crunching and using the web prefs reduced cpus to 75% & 90% use. No effect 10 minutes after updating so set local prefs.

CPU's now dropping to 48.1/50.6c with gpu down to 48c.

Anyone with ideas on how to improve this rigs cooling?

You said it has 2-120 mm on top of the case. Are there mounts so you could replace the 120s with 140s? Larger fans to try and pull more heat out of the case. I put an extra 140 on the side panel (mine had holes and mounting spots for extra fans for improved ventilation) to pull cool air into the case right over the CPU and just above the GPU. If those won't work, maybe opening the side panel and pointing a fan directly into it to try and cool it (last resort). My 2 cents.

My 8350 is running at 46°C full bore.

Gigabyte 970A-DS3P (Have swapped over to Gigabyte as the last 5 Asus boards pci-e slots died within 3 years)

Booting up this afternoon, within 15 minutes same thing happened with no crunching.

MB/GPU issues? After rebooting, it is now showing this...



...and has been running for close to 30 minutes with no issues (so far), with cores running about 22/24c & gpu at 37c.

Will check later to see if top fan area can accommodate 140mm (inaccessible due to location & will have to shutdown and pull out to gain access to top).

That MB is stated as being able to run that CPU. I also use Gigabyte MBs and haven't had any issues so far. I was looking back over this thread and note you have air cooler for the cpu. Any possibility that maybe one or both of fan connectors is loose and that the fans are getting all the way up to speed? That might explain why the Temps on the CPU are going high. I don't see on your graphs if they show fan speed on that Air radiator for the CPU. Again, random thought.

How do you control the fan speed on your GPU? What program are you using?

I have heard 970 chipsets running very hot.
I would suggest a 990FX motherboard.

But try to disable turbo C1, C4 and C6 state in Bios.
Check for a option CPU load line calibration.

After a reboot, it started Windows but before the log in screen got "autochk program not found - skipping autochk, seconds later get a BSD "0xc000003a fatal system error".

System shutdown, but it does not, just keeps the bsd showing.

I knew I should have left this till the weekend :-(

@Zalster use the program gigabyte OC-guru that came with the mb.

Wow, that's terrible... Hopefully one of the other will have better Idea on how to approach this problem. I googled what you put and found an answer from the microsoft forums. I didn't like the first reply but the second reply might be something to try if no one else here has any good ideas.
