Sorry, but that's exactly what happens when very small children suddenly bolt out of nowhere and get backed over. :-(

Cheers.

it's not magic mate.
Children never suddenly appear out of nowhere if you're paying attention.
If you don't touch it, you can't break it.

Well you could try and tell that to the many parents around the world who have backed over their kids just to see what they say (and the number of them is increasing each year).

Cheers.

When small children are concerned reason often does not enter into the equation, they have random behavior.

20th Century Government Safety Mandate:

Rear View Mirrors.

21st Century Government Safety Mandate:

Rear View Cameras.

Those against Rear View Cameras, were probably the same ones against Government Mandated Mirrors, Backup Lights, Collapsible Steering Wheels, etc.

Who needs the above if you drive carefully?

additional cost to car in adjusted dollars? mirrors 1/50 of a video system?
which was my original thought here, and the need/benefit being WAY oversold because frankly they want to sell us one.
you can play 'safety first' to justify anything these days..amply proven.
Cost/Benefit only favors the sellers after you've been worried into it.

Drivers have no more responsibility in being safe drivers. Any accident they are involved in was caused by someone/something else. All drivers are innocent victims. The auto manufacturers need to be sued and forced to pay for all the auto accidents caused by their cars and all innocent victims need to be compensated for life. That's the only solution.

Which is why two years after all cars have cameras, new legislation will come out to say the cameras must always record video, just for insurance purposes they say.
Then the video will have to be stored in the cloud, in case the on-board storage is damaged in a accident.
Then the video will be accessible to the insurance companies, who will monitor your driving and adjust premiums accordingly. (Read: up!)
Then the video will be accessible to the police and government...
