The good news is, my calculations and computer model indicate that automobiles will be too safe for almost everybody to afford before we run out of oil.

No, they will change the business model. Make them like games consoles or ink jet printers, very cheap to buy, very expensive to use.

Heh. I'd buy into that if i could imagine any possible way to do that with a CCTV feed.

Call me old fashioned, but what's wrong with a mirror?

In 2012 here both the my State's government and the last Federal government were trying to push for rear-view cameras in all new cars due to the alarmingly rising rates of children being killed in driveway accidents.

Things have gone quiet on this here lately, but children are still being backed over in their driveways by parents. :-(

Cheers.

because, clearly, if they're unwilling to turn their heads and look, they WILL pay attention to a 4inch screen on their dash.

Two years ago, when shopping for a new vehicle:

Went for a Test Drive in a vehicle equipped with a rear-view camera.

I was amazed how much safer backing-up from a driveway (children, pets, etc.) would be.

The Government's mandated rear-view mirrors for safety way back in the 20th century. Let's move into the 21st century.

Note: I do have a 'knee-jerk' reaction against Government Regulations.

Note #2: I bought that vehicle because of the camera (good salesman).

and after a month driving it i'll wager you don't pay any more attention to the video screen than you did the mirrors.

Actually, I pay more attention to the video screen, than the rear view mirror.

The video screen shown MUCH, MUCH, MORE than the interior rear view mirror.

The camera shows directly below the rear bumper, out to approximately 25 feet.

How long does it take for a child or pet, to scurry directly behind you vehicle, AFTER you enter the vehicle, startup, look into the rear view mirror (blind spot below and directly behind rear hood) and back up?

honestly? I always put my arm over the seat and turn my head while backing up, not using the throttle but at idle speed with my foot on the brake not the gas for the first few feet.. As any driver should.
My stand is still on an average day you don't even think about that screen. If YOU do the other 98% don't.
If you're careless you're careless and adding $800 worth of devices are unlikely to help after you start ignoring them.
If you don't touch it, you can't break it.

If you're a careless driver then you probably never used them in the first place.

You don't realize the 'Blind Spot' directly behind the vehicle, until you have this camera.

Agreed!!

Had one for a year now and use it all the time when reversing, not the mirror.

What about the blind spot directly in front of the vehicle, do we need another camera there.
I can see that cameras would be useful on a large vehicle like a Range Rover, but on my Ford Orion they're simply not necessary. So making them mandatory for all vehicles seems rather heavy handed.
Someone on a backhander from camera manufacturers do we think?

Why didn't they go further and insist that the wing mirrors be replaced with cameras. Some people have tried this and report 2.5% to 4% improvement in mpg figures.
If a car does 12,000 miles/year @ 30mpg then changing the wing mirrors to cameras would save 12 gallons of fuel/year at a 3% figure. Probably more than enough to offset the cost over the lifetime of the car. And they wouldn't be so easy to break off.

In part I agree with Simon, particularly about the back hander...
But have you ever tried driving a Lotus 47 or a Lotus Europa - the rear view mirrors on these cars were next to useless....

Don't think i'd be able to even get in one of those.

Agree.

But (to the careful driver's out there). You don't realize the 'Blind Spot' directly behind the vehicle, until you have this camera.

That makes no sense. That blind spot is obvious and in fact exactly the reason I back the way I do.

that sir, is not a safety concern, it's sabotage.
an entirely different thing.
It's not all that difficult to notice if there's anybody on foot near your vehicle while you walk to it and be sure you know where they are before you move.
If you don't touch it, you can't break it.

Sorry, but that's exactly what happens when very small children suddenly bolt out of nowhere and get backed over. :-(

Cheers.
