I have a motherboard with onboard GPU and will add a AMD R9 270X card via PCIe slot.

Currently with WinXP and GTX285 ..
Screen is connected to onboard GPU ..
Windows Desktop is extended to GPU card that BOINC see this GPU card and crunch project tasks on it. No VGA dummy plug needed.

From what I read here in the forum, with WinVista and 7 the GTX285 would need a VGA dummy plug that BOINC crunch project tasks on the GPU card.

How is it with Win8.1, the AMD R9 270X would need a VGA dummy plug that BOINC crunch project tasks on the GPU card (screen still connected to onboard GPU)?

Thanks.

The AMD R9 270X card have following connectors:
1 x HDMI (with 3D)
1 x DisplayPort
1 x Dual-Link DVI-D
1 x Dual-Link DVI-I

A "DVI to VGA Adapter" is included with the card.

I need to modify this adaptor and plug in the card that Win8.1/BOINC see/use the card?

Thanks.

At one point you couldn't mix different GPU vendors on Vista (at least with WDDM drivers):

But the page I linked to has changed, so perhaps it's changed with later drivers.

Oh, I'm sorry ..

I will pull out the GTX285 and will use the R9 270X card instead.

I don't see why you can't run displays from different vendors on Win 8.1, have you tried extending the desktop?

I still use WinXP and the GTX285.

I ordered Win8.1 and the R9 270X, they are on the way.

If the parcel was delivered, I will pull out the GTX285, push in the R9 270X and will install Win8.1.

The motherboard have just one PCIe 1.0 x16 slot. ;-)

The screen will be connected then still to onboard GPU.

If Win8.1 will need a "DVI dummy plug" for to see the new AMD graphic card, I thought I should prepare it (buy correct resistors).

BTW.
It should be 68 or 100 Ω .. , or which capacity?
I found different DIY descriptions.
Example: overclock.net

Thanks.

I wouldn't expect Windows 8.x to respond much differently than Windows 7.
Using Windows 7 & Cat 13.12 I do not require dummy plug to use my HD6870 when only the Intel GPU is connected to a monitor. I normally run the opposite configuration but just switch it around to test. Did manual detect & then "Try to connect anyway on: VGA".

Also the resisters for a dummy plug should be 75ohm but anything from 68-100 is acceptable. The ones shown in that link are actually 47ohm. 68ohm would be blue gray black
