Ive read that the humans need a gene pool of at least 600 to remain viable. Otherwise geneitic disorders will start to take effect. In North Amereica. The Native Americans where I live allways married someone from another tribe. That had two results, Genetic variation and a bond to the other tribe. You hopefully wont be wont to wipe out the tribe next door where you have relatives.
As for the rich they have the resources to build an enclave that we would never know about. But would it be like a caste system like India? Where the guy that runs the waste treatment plant is treated like crap. ( pun intended ) I actually read a science fiction story about that same thing back when I was a teenager. Sorry cant remember the name of the story.

When the great die off happens there will allways be pockets of some super adapting regular humans who will live and thrive. Unless the uber rich hunt them down. So they can remain elite.

Thanks for that.

Is that enough to wake up America?

Even Fox News gives a half fair report to then include the inevitable conspiracy theory political ripost...

One rather apt comment from the BBC article about the report:

Warming 'increasingly disruptive' across US - report

"If we don't slam the brakes on the carbon pollution driving climate change, we're dooming ourselves and our children"

Is that enough to wake up America?

And China?

The deafening silence about CHINA, the worst CO2 polluter is illuminating.

In 2010, USA emitted 5.433 Billion tons of CO2.
In 2010, China emitted 8.287 Billion tons of CO2.

In 2011, USA emitted 5.420 Billion tons of CO2.
In 2011, China emitted 9.700 Billion tons of CO2.

In 2012, USA emitted 5.190 Billion tons of CO2.
In 2012, China emitted 9.860 Billion tons of CO2.

(data sources: US DoE (2010), The European Commission (2011, 2012), and The Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (2011, 2012)).

We know about China but this report was an American Report about America. Nuff said.

So your political excuse is that America blames China, whilst China blames America, both excusing themselves to continue to pollute "because the other is polluting anyway"...

And so we all get polluted to hell in a never-ending death spiral of everyone stupidly determined to out-pollute everyone else!

Who do we then shoot/nuke first?

Stupid or not stupid?...

If the west leads the way, China will follow, since they copy all our technology regardless.

No.

When China is at THE TOP OF THE LIST for the World's concern: Then we will know this entire discussion from the Warmest, is not just Political/Ideological.

Nuff said.

China has a much larger population than the USA, so the real concern is the amount per person, at the moment that is the USA.

If you really want China to stop producing CO2 etc. then stop buying goods from them.
Like where are your socks made, virtually none are made in the USA or Europe these days. 3/4 of all socks made are produced in 2 countries, Turkey and guess where. Then add in all your electronics goods and solar panels.

So by inference a lot of China's carbon footprint is to produce goods sold in the USA and Europe, so shouldn't these figures be taken off China's total and addded to the countries buying the goods.

+ 1000 raised to infinity (Hello everyone :))

I haven't bought anything produced in China for a VERY long time. Originally because of their ivory, rhino and tiger trade and for their human rights record, but it works for carbon emissions too.

Er... China? I will darn socks forever before buying ones made in China.
(This has collateral benefits... To actively avoid displaying them from a hospital trolley in casualty, I find myself contributing to greater road safety by taking extra care not to go *splat*... like under a bus for instance :)

Feeling a little mischievous today WinterKnight :) Now THAT is a VERY good idea...

Oooh... that WOULD make for some very interesting figures! :)

Lovely chatting yet again :)

Not even started, ever looked at steel production,

or electronics production and sales,
China, Japan and the other Asia-Pacific countries produce ~66% and buy 33%,
The USA, EU and the rest of the World make 33%** and purchase 66%.

** quite often with components produced in China et al.

You want components that use Lithium, well only two countries produce it these days Russia and China.

And what is the USA doing, trying to sell all its helium asap as cheap as possible. A market that won't go pop: why helium balloons could one day cost £100 each
Once the US - which supplies 80 per cent of the world's helium - stops selling off its store at an artificially low price, we have a problem.

Thank you for reminding me - it's been awhile since I have. And of course, wherever there's steel, there's concrete :/

True. To maintain my position on Chinese goods, I know I'm going to find it nigh impossible to replace some items once they stop working. (I don't upgrade unless something breaks and I can't fix it... hence a mobile phone that forces my daughter to walk on the other side of the street when I use it in public :) Does give me more room to veer off at tangents whilst I'm texting! I don't text in darned socks though :) too many busses about.)

If something works I see no reason to retire it, and no one has the slightest interest in stealing it either :) I've lived more of my life without technology than I have with - so I could do without most modern gadgets. I would miss SETI and it's setizens though. :(

What happens when the majority of people inside China demand higher wages, standard of living, working conditions, housing, etc.?

They won't do that, they never 'learned' how. China has a totally different culture too.

OK it's a done deal, close the thread.

Off to watch an asteroid hit someone smack between the eyes then? :) Just when I was about to start going on about nitrogen run-off too... *sigh*

Mississippi River network's buffering system for nitrates is overwhelmed

As a result of its filtration systems being overwhelmed, the river system operates less as a buffer and more as a conveyor belt, transporting nitrates to the Gulf of Mexico. The amount of nitrates flowing into the gulf from the Mississippi has already created the world's second biggest dead zone, an oxygen-depleted area where fish and other aquatic life can't survive.

Late edit: :) and this looked interesting too...upward motion of Earth's crust

"You would expect this rebound to happen over thousands of years and instead we have been able to measure it in just over a decade. You can almost see it happening which is just incredible.

"Because the mantle is 'runnier' below the Northern Antarctic Peninsula it responds much more quickly to what's happening on the surface. So as the glaciers thin and the load in that localised area reduces, the mantle pushes up the crust.

I totally believe in nitrates; they wash from people's fertilized lawns into lakes and make aquatic vegetation grow so fast it has to be harvisted to keep lakes from becoming swamps. This has become a big problem in my lifetime. How do I know? I can see it. We never had this problem when god knows what was dumped anywhere and everywhere.

N.J. DEP to take over Lake Hopatcong weed harvest. Harvest is the right word as there is a commercial value to the plants but not enough to cover the cost of removal.

In Norfolk, evidence of climate change is in the streets at high tide

No, not the English county, but Norfolk, Virginia. Home of the World's largest Naval Base.

On May 6, the Obama administration released the third National Climate Assessment, and President Obama proclaimed climate change no longer a theory; its effects, he said, are already here. This came as no surprise in Norfolk, where normal tides have risen 11 / 2 feet over the past century and the sea is rising faster than anywhere else on the East Coast.
