The new build to replace my dead i7/930 will occur on 16 April and I have a couple of questions. There will be some history on both machines just prior to the build.

> The drives associated with the active machine (i7/950) will be swapped out and replaced by the drives from the dead machine (i7/930) and it will lose 2GB of ram giving it a total of 4GB.

> The new machine will be a i7/4770K sitting atop a ASROCK Extreme4 mobo and will have the original 3x2GB mem sticks and the one from the dead machine giving it a total of 8GB. The sticks from both machines were matched and ordered on the same day from Corsair, so it shouldn't be a problem. I intend to exclude the onboard graphics from BOINC, so that I can watch videos and play games without suspending the GPUs as I do now.

> All devices associated with the current machine (i7/950) will be swapped out and installed in the new machine.

> I don't intend to OC the new machine even though it can be. It was done purely for cost purposes.

Q1) Will I be able to combine the credits from the old machine (i7/930) with its replacement (i7/950) as they will have the same name?

Q2) Should I drain the queue on the currently active machine (i7/950) prior to the build or just go ahead and pick up where I left off.

From my experience, you should be able to merge the two computers without problem. I did like 4 builds to test both MBs and OSs and just kept merging them into the now running computer. (my names did not always match by the way)

I know others will tell you differently but I have had great success with just keeping everything going. You will probably loose those WUs in progress as you will have to change some MB drivers I am sure. But the WUs that have not started will do just fine. IMHO......

The MB drivers should not have to be changed. Remember, all I'm doing is swapping all devices from one machine to another. The only WUs that I foresee losing are those that have either already timed out or will have timed out on the dead machine at the time of the build. Once that machine has been reconstituted as (B-SYS - i7/950), the only thing that will change on this machine is the CPU and the lost of 1 mem stick, then those WUs will drop off the queue and the rest should resume as they were. My main concern will be combining the results from the current active machine (A-SYS - i7/950) to the new one (A-SYS - i7/4770K) as it will be a totally new platform.

As long as the account is the same it should easily merge. Just remember that you will not be able to merge right away.....at least that is what I found. It takes a day or two before you will see the other units.

If your old BOINC folders are intact and carried over it should just pickup from where it left off.

Cheers.

That has never been a issue as I've done it several times over the years. It has been several years since I have upgraded to a completely disparate machine. If memory serves me right when I went from a Pent4 to a i7/930, I couldn't merge the machines because the types were incompatible.
