I'm running BOINC 7.2.42 on Mavericks and I have troubles with the screensaver. It runs for 10 seconds (graph mode), goes to black screen and restarts. This repeats until it goes to overview mode (no problems there). Does anyone have a clue how to fix this?

My moms PC runs BOINC too, same configuration as my Mac and no troubles.

What are your preference setting for your screensaver and are you doing more than 1 project on you mac or signed up for more than 1 project?

These are my seti@home screensaver settings:

Blank screensaver after 10 minutes.
Run overview screensaver for 2 minutes.
Run project screensavers for 2 minutes.
Switch between project screensavers every 0 minutes.

I only signed up for seti@home.

Well those preferences are fine. I've not heard of this before, it almost sounds like bonic is having trouble generating the graphics. Have you tried uninstalling bonic and deleting it and reinstalling a new version? If not, then finish what ever work units you have. You can tell seti no new work units and once it's finished and reported, uninstall boinc or just move all components to trash and delete. Restart your mac (just in case something is lingering in memory) and then download a new installer and install bonic and reconnect to seti. My guess ( and it is a guess) is that something was corrupted during the installation. I won't use the previous downloaded installer. If that doesn't do the trick let us know. Maybe one of the others here will have a better idea.

Edit..Just had something similar happen using your setting only it didn't restart, just went blank. Hmm..I normally don't switch between overview and screen saver. Normally I just leave it on the screen saver until the screen turns off after 20 minutes. Maybe it's too short of a time between each work unit screensaver that's causing it to just not start correctly.

why??

If only it was that easy. The developers know about this and are trying to fix it. I tested one of the latest incarnations last night (on Windows) and although it was now steady --no more flickering, or switching to and fro desktop-- it still had another bug.

Nope, the problem is still there. It must be a graphics issue. I tried everything. The weird thing is it did work in the past. Mb the graphic drivers changed since the OS X 10.9.2 release.

I had exactly the same problem (although it did actually do the work and got the tasks completed despite the graphics), on MBP with Mountain Lion, now I installed the Development version 7.3.19 and this one seems to work beautifully.

Not sure if this is still relevant, but...

I had this problem for a while after updating to maverics as well. Screensaver shutting down BOINC.
I set all the prefs in BOINC and in sys prefs to no avail.

As a temporary fix, I had to think of a way to trick my computer into thinking it was being used while I slept.

So, I created an Applet/Automator app.

Simplest way for me was to use Automator to record my movements of opening, then closing a document on my desktop. Setting the repeat for the number of hours for sleep has never stopped my computer from working on BOINC

Hope it helps,
Cheers

I'm running Windows 7 on my Alienware and having the same issue; the screen saver is constantly trying to restart and flickering between screens.

I just reinstalled it yesterday after having to get a new hard drive, so i know there's no lingering older version on board.

it seems to be processing work, but it's irksome.

help?

I just upgraded to 7.2.42 (x64) and am getting the same thing. It was working normally prior to upgrade... BOINC screen that shows the BOINC logo, with "BOINC screensaver loading", then I see SETI for 1-2 seconds, then a blank screen with an intermittent task bar, then finally just a blank screen until I bring it out of screensaver with a mouse move or key stroke. It does the same thing when previewing the screensaver from the Windows personalization screen.

OS: Windows 7 64 bit
Mem: 4 GB RAM
HDD: 175 GB

BOINC SS Settings:

Blank screensaver after: Never
Run BOINC screensaver for: 2
Run Project screensavers for: 10
Switch between project screensavers every: Never

It's a known issue with the current version of BOINC. You might want downgrading to a lower BOINC version or just don't use the BOINC screensaver. The data will still be crunched if you don't use the screensaver.

Here's a link to an older version of BOINC

Problem has to do with CPU usage setting. I had reduced my "Use At Most" CPU to 75% to reduce heat and fan noise. Screen saver started flashing. Also, if "Suspend work when non-BOINC usage is above" is set to anything below 80%, the program stops and gives 'Suspended due to high CPU usage" message on the screen.

Could we get a less intensive screen graphic? At least for the summer when weather is hot? Just kidding, but even the fan noise from a Macbook is annoying in a small solar powered cabin where everything is normally very, very quiet.

Thanks.

Why point to such an old one? 7.2.33, which doesn't have the problem is the version that came before 7.2.42, so why not point to that?

That was the only BOINC I found other than the current one on this page

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

Wasn't my intent to mislead

edit

I also wanted a installer that was straight forward where he wouldn't have to go looking thru different folders to install things if he had never done it before.

Okay.

Then do know for the future, you were pointing to the so-called 'dl' site. This site has just about all of the Boinc versions in history. Bookmark and search through it next time, or look through the Boinc change log thread on the Boinc forums. :)

I just installed the newest version of BOINC, 7.4.12, and the screen saver works much better in this version.
